Te Motu a Hiaroa Charitable Trust are proposing to install a motorized gate at the eastern landside of Island Road (causeway).

The initiative is to help keep the community and whanau safe, the land and harbour clean, while ensuring continued recreation access for all

Why is the Trust installing a gate

  • Community safety: will restrict overnight access to reduce anti-social behaviour from people gathering in cars
  • Keeping the harbour and environment clean – reduce people illegally dumping rubbish
  • Preserving a welcoming space – ensuring everyone can continue to enjoy access and recreation

Gate operating hours:

  • Closed from: 8pm to 5am, Monday to Sunday
  • The gate will automatically adjust to seasonal changes, ensuring a reliable schedule for public access
  • Walking access to public parts of the island will be maintained
  • Walking the dog will also be maintained. Dogs must be on a leash at all times
  • The gate system will include contingency measures for fire and emergency services to ensure rapid and unrestricted entry during emergency situations.

Working together for the community

The Trust, Auckland Council, and Watercare support installing the gate.

Te Motu a Hiaroa (Puketutu Island) is a 190-ha volcanic island of cultural significance in the Manukau Harbour. Although it is an island, it is connected by way of a causeway, namely Island Road.

The island is owned by the Te Motu a Hiaroa Charitable Trust (TMHCT), which consists of representatives from Te Kawerau a Maki, Makaurau Marae Maori Trust, and Waikato-Tainui.

The island has a co-management regime via the Te Motu a Hiaroa Management Trust (TMHMT), which consists of representatives from TMHCT, Auckland Council, and Watercare. Auckland Council leases most of the island to provide public access and open space.
