We’re responding to community safety and accessibility concerns on Matipo Road and thanks to the Hibiscus and Bays Local Board Transport Capital Fund, we’re making improvements to help people cross the road more safely near Mairangi Bay School. Matipo Road is often busy due to its proximity to Mairangi Bay School, with many cars turning, stopping, and people walking, scootering, or biking through the area, this activity can make crossing the road challenging and unsafe for students, caregivers, and the wider community.

The changes we’re making in May 2026:

  • Upgrade the existing school patrolled (Kea) crossing outside 32 Matipo Road to a new zebra crossing with side islands so people in large groups can cross safely.
  • Rebuild the footpath including new kerb and channel on both sides of the crossing to provide more space for people to wait to cross safely.
  • Install new yellow tactile pavers at the crossing points to help visually impaired people locate the facility and safely cross the road.
  • Extend No Stopping at All Times (Broken Yellow Lines) outside 31 Matipo Road to clear access and improve visibility for motorists using this section of the road. No existing parking spaces are affected.
  • Install a new pram crossing to make it safer and more convenient for people pushing prams or strollers, and to assist those with mobility needs.
  • Install new streetlights outside 29 and 32 Matipo Road to improve visibility at night and in low-light conditions.
  • Install new road markings and signs to support these changes.

A larger drawing can be found to the right of this page.

Benefits to your community:

  • Safer crossings for children and people with different accessibility needs.
  • Encourages walking, biking, and scootering – which is healthier and better for the environment.
  • Helps reduce traffic congestion around the school.
  • New road markings and signs clarify right of way, improve safety by minimising risk of collisions, and ensures compliance with traffic regulations.

What happens next:

  • We will be in touch with local residents before any work takes place.
  • Any change to the plan will be updated on our website.
