About this project
We are making the Spencer Road and East Coast Road intersection safer by adding a new footpath and installing traffic lights with pedestrian crossings.
Right now, there is no safe place to cross and no footpath on the western side, making it hard for people, especially school children to cross safely.
These improvements will make it easier and safer for everyone to walk in the area.
The changes we're making in mid-2026
Install a new traffic-controlled intersection at East Coast Road and Spencer Road.
Construct a concrete footpath and shared path between #760 and #720 East Coast Road.
Relocate the bus stop and shelter from outside #655 East Coast Road to #673 East Coast Road.
Install ‘No Stopping at All Times’ (Broken Yellow Lines) at various approaches of this intersection to clear access and improve visibility for all road users removing 106 car parks in the area.
Upgrade bus stops outside #675, #673 East Coast Road
Install a new bus stop outside #7 and #12 Spencer Road
Regrade driveways that will be impacted by the new footpath
A larger drawing showing the changes can be found to the right of this project page.
What happens next:
Any updates to the plan will be posted on our website.
We will be in touch again before the work starts.
If you have any questions or comments on the planned changes, please email us at ATengagement@at.govt.nz (ref: Spencer Road and East Coast Road) by xx May 2026.
