About this project

We’re improving footpath safety on Sunset Road in Unsworth Heights to provide safe, convenient, and well-connected walking options in your community.

Currently, people walking between 120 and 130 Sunset Road have to use the berm because there is a gap in the footpath. The changes outlined below will fill this gap and connect the existing footpaths on either side, creating a safer and more convenient walking route.

The changes we’re making in late 2026:

  • Install a new footpath and kerb between #120 and 130 Sunset Road to improve access and connectivity for people on foot.
  • Paint new "No Stopping At All Times" (broken yellow lines) between #118 and #130 Sunset Road to provide clear access for the eastbound traffic lane. This means we need to reallocate road space and remove approximately 9 street parking spaces.
  • Install a new safety fence between #122 and #130 Sunset Road to prevent falls where the ground slopes down from the footpath.
  • Clear vegetation and prune trees where necessary to ensure safe and unobstructed access for footpath users.
  • Reconstruct driveways that will be impacted by the new footpath. Any work that alters a driveway will be at our cost.
  • Apply new road markings by the new footpath to guide drivers of the road lane.

A larger drawing showing the changes can be found to the right of this page.

Benefits to your community:

  • Well-maintained footpaths are safer for people who walk and ride their bikes and scooters, reducing the risk of being hurt or injured.
  • More footpaths make it easier and more stress-free for the community to move around the neighbourhood, offering better connections to schools, parks, public transport, and other local amenities.
  • Walking and cycling are good for the environment and good for your health. They help reduce reliance on cars for local trips, decreasing traffic congestion and reducing our carbon emissions.
  • A continuous footpath reduces the risk of slips, trips and falls.

What happens next:

  • We will be in touch with local residents and businesses prior to any work taking place.
  • Any changes to the plan will be updated on our website.

How to contact us:

If you’d like to discuss our plans, share what you know about your area or let us know if there’s anything we’ve missed, email us at ATEngagement@at.govt.nz or leave us a comment on our website by 2 March 2026.
