About the project

Following concerns for driver safety, we are carrying out safety improvements along a section of Puhoi Road, at the bend outside the Puhoi Heritage Museum.

This area is considered a high-risk road due to records that show a pattern of loss of control crashes, mostly involving motorcycles. We’re committed to making changes that will reduce the likelihood of motorists losing control at this bend, ensuring the road is safe for all drivers and their passengers.

The changes we're making by January 2026

  • Installing new "SLOW" road marking on red surface to remind motorists they need to slow down as they approach the bend.
  • Install a skid-resistant surfacing on the north bound lane of the bend. This aims to reduce speeds to minimise the risk of accidents. It also improves vehicle grip especially during wet weather conditions.
  • Re-paint existing road markings along the bend and install additional speed and chevron signs. Chevron signs warn drivers that they are about to approach a bend or a curve.

Benefits to your community

  • Increases driver awareness of the end and encourages appropriate speeds as they approach the bend.
  • Better signage and road markings will help road users who are unfamiliar with this stretch of the road to drive to the conditions, manage their speed and travel through the bend safely.
  • Improves safety by clarifying right of way, minimising risk of collisions and ensures compliance with traffic regulations.

What happens next

  • We will be in touch with local residents and businesses prior to any work taking place.
  • Any change to the plan will be updated on our website.
  • We know this may cause some inconvenience, and we will minimise this as much as possible while balancing safety concerns.

How to contact us

If you'd like to discuss our plans, share what you know about your area or let us know if there's anything we've missed, email us at ATEngagement@at.govt.nz or leave us a comment on our website by 12 September 2025.

Please mention Puhoi Road in the subject line.
