About the project

Auckland Transport is proposing changes to the Heavy Vehicle/T2 lanes along Great South Road between Church Street and Portage Road in Mt Wellington.

Heavy Vehicle/T2 (HV/T2) lanes allow heavy vehicles, including buses, and vehicles with two or more people to travel in them.

What we are proposing

The changes we are proposing:

1. Making the existing HV/T2 lanes on both sides of Great South Road, between Portage Road and Church Street East permanent but reducing the times that they are operating:

• The lanes currently operate between 7am to 7pm, Monday to Sunday.
• We are proposing to change the operating times to 7am to 10am and 4pm to 7pm, Monday to Friday.

2. Installing new broken yellow lines road marking along sections of Great South Road, between Portage Road and Vestry Drive. Vehicles would not be able to stop in these sections ("No Stopping at All Times") which will remove approximately 100 vehicle parking spaces.

Why are we proposing it

• The HV/T2 lanes have been operating between 7am and 7pm since January 2023. They were installed as a temporary measure to improve the movement of buses while trains were not operating fully.
• The lanes have improved travel times at peak times.
• Travel data indicates the lanes have improved the average speeds for freight vehicles by about 12% in the northbound direction during the morning peak and 11% in the southbound direction during the afternoon peak on weekdays.
• Reducing the operating times of the HV/T2 lanes would return some on-street parking spaces along this section of Great South Road between 10am and 4pm on weekdays and all day on weekends.
• Removing on-street parking in some locations is necessary to ensure that parked vehicles will not reduce the road to one lane and hinder the movement of vehicles travelling along Great South Road in these key locations.

Benefits of the proposal

• These changes will improve overall travel times and efficiency for people travelling along this section of Great South Road.

Impacts of the proposal

• Some on-street parking locations will be removed. Currently these sections of road are unavailable for on-street parking 7am-7pm, seven days a week. We have observed that these locations are rarely used for vehicle parking.
