About the project
We are proposing changes to the intersection of Grande Vue Road and Hill Road and access to the State Highway 1 motorway onramp.
The changes will improve pedestrian safety for those walking to the Auckland Botanic Gardens, local shops, and eateries. They will also improve road operation, include two new lanes on Grande Vue Road to the motorway, and remove the confusion at the Grande Vue Road and Hill Road intersection because of the unusual layout, where left-turning traffic from Hill Road has priority over right-turning traffic.
Our proposal has been developed with the NZ Transport Agency to address community safety concerns.
What we are proposing
Improving road operation and safety at the intersection of Grande Vue Road and Hill Road, Manurewa
Grande Vue Road and Hill Road intersection improvements -Proposal Drawings
Installing traffic lights at the intersection of Grand Vue Road and Hill Road to help manage traffic on this busy intersection and give priority to people on foot to cross the road when needed. The new traffic lights will be coordinated with the nearby on-and-off ramps signals and monitored alongside the ramp signals to maximise efficiency.
Create two traffic lanes on Grande Vue Road to the SH1 on-ramp for ease of access to the SH1 motorway on-ramp.
Rebuild footpaths and install yellow tactile pavers at the crossing points to help people find their way to crossings and safely cross the road.
Installing new traffic islands and kerb ramps at the intersection of Grande Vue Road with SH1 on-ramp.
To accommodate the intersection changes, we need to remove some parking.
The approaches to the intersection of Grande Vue Road with the SH1 onramp will be treated to a skid-resistant road surface.
Install new signage and paint new road markings to support the proposed changes.
Benefits and impacts
It addresses the current safety and operational issues at the intersection of Grande Vue Road with Hill Road.
It improves safety for pedestrians, particularly those with disabilities, by giving them a pedestrian phase to cross the road safely when needed.
It enhances pedestrian access to the Auckland Botanic Gardens, local shops, and eateries, making it more convenient for the community.
The addition of two new lanes on Grande Vue Road will ensure a smooth traffic flow and reduce the risk of congestion through the intersection to the motorway.
Coordination and monitoring of the new traffic lights with the nearby on-and-off ramps signals to maximise efficiency.
Parking changes involve removing 14 on-street parking spaces on Hill Road and reinstating 4; plus removing 9 on-street parking spaces on Grande Vue Road.
