Heads up! We’ll be making changes to bus facilities near you in 2025.

These upgrades aim to create safer, more accessible, and reliable bus services for the community.

About the project

From April 2025, we’ll be replacing the 120 bus with 2 new routes: 12 & 902. This change is part of our Northwest bus network, making it easier for bus users to connect to West & North Auckland.

Route 12:

• Frequent between Henderson, Westgate, and Constellation Drive

• Will run every 15 min, 7am to 7pm, 7 days a week,

• Quicker access to the Upper Harbour area.

Route 902:

• Will maintain Greenhithe’s current access and service, similar to the old 120 route.

Before these new routes begin, we need to upgrade bus facilities to ensure safe, reliable service for the Greenhithe community, making it easier for more people to travel by bus.

Funded under the Climate Action Transport Targeted Rate (CATTR) to offer you safe, more sustainable transport options and reduce carbon emissions.

The changes we’re making

  • New and Upgraded Bus Stops: Adding new stops at Kyle Road and Orwell Road, and upgrading stops at Greenhithe Road with shelters, signage, and clear road markings to ensure easy access and safe operation.
  • Enhanced Safety Measures: “No stopping” lines are being painted at each site to improve visibility for both buses and motorists and allow smooth bus entry and exit.
  • Accessibility Features: Tactile pavers, which are yellow guidance markers, will be installed at each stop to help visually impaired passengers find their way safely.
  • Improved Crossing: Crossing islands will be added at Orwell Road and Greenhithe Road, allowing people on foot a safe waiting area to cross in two stages.
  • Wider Waiting Areas: Grass berms will be replaced with larger footpaths where needed, providing more space for passengers waiting to board.
  • Minimised Impact on Parking: Some on-street parking will be affected to keep bus zones clear and improve safety, but this has been kept to a minimum.

The drawings can be downloaded on the right of this webpage, that shows these improvements in more detail

Site 1: 170 Kyle Road

  1. Install new bus stop, road markings and signage as the start and end point of the 902 Bus service.
  2. Paint no stopping at all times (broken yellow lines) to ensure clear visibility for motorists and to support bus entry and exit at the stop.
  3. Install new tactile pavers, which are yellow guidance markers to help visually impaired people find their way to the bus stop and onto the service.
  4. Replacing small grass berm with new upgraded footpath to give more room for people to wait and board the bus
  5. Installation of a new shelter.

Site 2: 30 Orwell Road

  1. Install two new bus stops, shelter, road markings and signage.
  2. Paint no stopping at all times (broken yellow lines) to ensure clear visibility for motorists and to support bus entry and exit at the new bus stops.
  3. Install new tactile pavers, which are yellow guidance markers to help visually impaired people find their way to the bus stop and onto the service.
  4. Install a new crossing refuge island where people can safely wait when crossing the road. This is a small section of pavement within the median strip, surrounded by concrete. It helps people crossing to safely wait for a gap in traffic (while giving way to motorists) to finish crossing the road.
  5. Installation of a new grass berm.

Site 3: 110 Greenhithe Road

  1. Install new East bound bus stop, shelter, road markings and signage.
  2. Paint no stopping at all times (broken yellow lines) to ensure clear visibility for motorists and to support bus entry and exit at the new and existing bus stops.
  5. Upgrade the existing bus stop road markings, so that buses can enter and exit the bus stop without being obstructed by parked cars.

Site 4: 126 Greenhithe Road

  1. Upgrade the existing bus stop road markings, including painting no stopping at all times (broken yellow lines) so that buses can enter and exit the bus stop without being obstructed, also increasing visibility for motorist using the off ramp.
  2. Install new tactile pavers, which are yellow guidance markers to help visually impaired people find their way to the bus stop and onto the service.

We need to clear access and re-allocate road space by removing some on-street parking as part of this proposal. This improves safety for buses to pull into and out of the proposed and existing bus stops increasing visibility for motorists and people on foot. We understand this can be inconvenient, so we’ve minimised it as much as possible.

Benefits to your community

  • Bus shelters (space permitting) will provide people with a place to sit while waiting for the bus and provides protection from the wind and rain.
  • New road markings and signs will improve and support the bus stop relocations and customer safety.
  • It helps ensure those with mobility needs can navigate on and of a bus more easily.
  • Easier access to shops, parks, and other facilities encourages people to visit local businesses more often, benefiting the local economy.
  • Future-Ready – Improved transport now prepares the area for growth.
  • Links to Constellation Drive, Albany, Hibiscus Coast, Westgate, Te Atatū, Henderson and into the city
  • Walking and cycling links from nearby suburbs
