About the project
We’re making changes to improve pedestrian safety and access to public transport on Great North Road — a busy arterial route. These upgrades respond to community concerns about crossing safety near Waikumete Cemetery and the shops across the road.
The new crossing facilities will ensure our tamariki, school whānau, and local community can cross safely.
The changes we’re making in 2026
Installing a traffic light controlled (signalised) crossing is to help manage traffic on a busy road and gives priority to people on foot. Motorists must stop at a red traffic light to allow people walking to cross.
Upgrading the footpaths and pram crossing on either side of the crossing allowing more room to wait to cross Great North Road safely.
Installing a high-friction road surface to reduce speed and improve skid resistance on the approach to the crossing, especially in wet weather.
Upgrading tactile pavers which are yellow guidance paving markers to help vision impaired people cross the road.
Relocation of bus stops into a tail-to-tail arrangement and upgrading waiting areas. To provide safety benefits for the traffic light controlled (signalised) crossing.
Install new signs, signal poles and clear road markings to ensure easy access and safe operation.
New stairs to be installed near shops to allow easy access to the bus stop.
Benefits to your community
Safer for everyone – Makes it easier and safer for pedestrians, including older adults and people with accessibility needs, to cross safely.
Supports local access – Improves access to Waikumete Cemetery, nearby shops, and public transport.
Encourages more travel choices – Gives people more confidence to walk, cycle or use public transport.
Improves visibility and safety – Tail-to-tail bus stop layout improves sightlines and reduces conflict between pedestrians and vehicles.
Responds to community feedback – Addresses concerns raised about pedestrian safety in this area.
