About the project
Making the Gray Avenue corridor safer for all road users!
This project is part of Auckland Transport's Road Safety programme, an improvement programme that prioritises safety interventions at high-risk intersections and corridors in Auckland. The intention of this project is to slow driving speeds along the full length of Gray Avenue to reduce speed related and failing to give way crashes. There have been 58 reported crashes along Gray Avenue between 2020-2024 including 16 Injury crashes. In 2025 alone, there have been 12 reported crashes 3 serious and 2 minor injuries, with the majority caused by drivers going too fast or failing to give way at the intersections. These statics confirm the importance of reducing driving speeds along this corridor to improve safety of all road users, including students walking and cycling to local schools and commuters accessing Middlemore Hospital and local community facilities.
We are proposing the following safety improvements:
This project aims to improve safety by slowing down driving speeds and providing better pedestrian facilities along Gray Avenue. It will complement the new bus stops going in along Gray Avenue for the new 326 Bus route (haveyoursay.at.govt.nz/new-bus-stops-in-mangere). We propose to install four mini roundabouts and side islands at the following intersections. We expect the safety benefits to out-way the minor delays that these roundabouts may cause:

Benefits and Impacts
- Reduction in crashes along Gray Avenue and at the intersections
- The mini roundabouts will slow driver speeds along the corridor
Safer pedestrian crossing facilities will make it easier and more enjoyable for you, our tamariki, and the community to navigate your neighbourhood with confidence
Our study of the proposal shows that while there will be some minor delays along Gray Avenue, it will be easier and safer to get in and out of the side roads
Parking changes will involve removing parking spaces and painting broken yellow lines (see plans for details) to improve visibility for both pedestrians and drivers with the total numbers being:
