We’re delivering improvements to Great North Road, between Ponsonby Road and Crummer Road, ending before the Grey Lynn Village. This stretch of road is a key route in and out of the city centre so we are making it safer and easier for everyone to get around, whether driving, walking, biking, or taking the bus.
For safety, and to provide space for new loading zones, pedestrian crossings, bus stops and cycle lanes, there will be less space on Great North Road for parking. The local residential population is expected to grow by approximately 24 percent by 2031, and more businesses are opening locally. This means available parking spaces need to work more efficiently to ensure access for visitors and businesses is maximised.
We’ve taken a detailed look at how parking works in the area. Surveys checking how parking is used and feedback from locals tell us some parking locally could be better used. That’s why we’ve reviewed parking management on Great North Road and at the top of sides streets and have developed a parking proposal balancing the needs of customers, businesses, and visitors.
We’re now seeking your feedback to help shape the final plan.
Benefits of the proposal
Our proposal aims to improve access and efficiency. Key benefits include:
- Better access to businesses: New loading zones, free parking with time restrictions (P15, P60, P120) and paid parking options help ensure customers and deliveries can come and go easily.
- Increased turnover: Time limits and pricing encourage fair use of spaces, so more people can use them throughout the day.
- Support for alternative transport: Encourages walking, cycling, public transport, and ride-sharing.
- Adds new spaces on side roads: Angled parking on side streets will create 10 additional spaces.
- No impact on residential parking zones: Existing P120 Parking Zones will remain unchanged.
- Supports residential and business growth
