In November last year, we asked for feedback on proposed parking changes around Great North Road (between Ponsonby Road and Crummer Road). Our thanks to everyone who shared their views and suggestions.

Engagement outcome

We’ve listened to your feedback and, based on what we heard from the community — including businesses and other stakeholders — we have made some changes to the original proposal. We will:

  • Reduce the days of operation for paid parking to Monday to Friday. This aligns with the operating times for the P120 residents’ zone and recognises the lower demand for parking on the weekends locally.
  • Reduce the paid parking price on Dean Street – northern side (approximately 50 car parking spaces) - to $1 per hour.

You can view the feedback report here.

What happens next

We will formalise the changes (reflecting the above improvements) and anticipate the signage and pay machines will be in place within the next three months.

If you would like to speak with the project team, please contact info@at.govt.nz.

Background

We recently completed improvements to Great North Road, between Ponsonby Road and Crummer Road, ending before the Grey Lynn Village. This stretch of road is a key route in and out of the city centre so we are making it safer and easier for everyone to get around, whether driving, walking, biking, or taking the bus.

For safety, and to provide space for new loading zones, pedestrian crossings, bus stops and cycle lanes, there is less space on Great North Road for parking. The local residential population is expected to grow by approximately 24 percent by 2031, and more businesses are opening locally. This means available parking spaces need to work more efficiently to ensure access for visitors and businesses is maximised.

We’ve taken a detailed look at how parking works in the area. Surveys checking how parking is used and feedback from locals tell us some parking locally could be better used. That’s why we’ve reviewed parking management on Great North Road and at the top of sides streets and have developed a parking proposal balancing the needs of customers, businesses, and visitors.

We’re now seeking your feedback to help shape the final plan.

Benefits of the proposal

Our proposal aims to improve access and efficiency. Key benefits include:

  • Better access to businesses: New loading zones, free parking with time restrictions (P15, P60, P120) and paid parking options help ensure customers and deliveries can come and go easily.
  • Increased turnover: Time limits and pricing encourage fair use of spaces, so more people can use them throughout the day.
  • Support for alternative transport: Encourages walking, cycling, public transport, and ride-sharing.
  • Adds new spaces on side roads: Angled parking on side streets will create 10 additional spaces.
  • No impact on residential parking zones: Existing P120 Parking Zones will remain unchanged.
  • Supports residential and business growth

Seeking feedback

Whether people live, work, or visit the Great North Road area, local knowledge can help us spot issues we may have missed and refine the plan to better meet local needs. By hearing from a wide range of perspectives, we can create a parking solution that works for everyone.

Our proposal includes:

  • Loading zones.
  • Free parking with time restrictions (P15, P60 and P120)
  • Paid parking so people can choose how long they park for
  • Improved parking on side streets by changing to angle parking (where able)
  • Making best use of limited number of spaces for parking.

  • The suggested locations for time restricted parking
