About the project
A high number of people use the existing zebra crossing on George Street in Waiuku, located outside the main entry to Waiuku Primary School. The crossing is flat and located on a hilltop, which makes it hard for drivers coming from the north, off Queen Street, to see it clearly.
Requests have been received from the community to address the safety issues at this crossing so we’re proposing the following safety improvements.
The changes we’re proposing include:
Installing a zebra crossing on top of a wide flat speed hump outside the entrance of Waiuku Primary School. It will be level with the footpath with a long off-ramp. This makes it more comfortable for larger vehicles and their passengers.
Installing tactile pavers which are yellow guidance paving markers to help people find their way to the crossing and safely cross the road.
Painting additional broken yellow lines (no stopping at all times) to clear access and help with visibility in the following locations
Near the proposed crossing on George Street
At the entry and exit points of Glebe Place
On George Street near the corner exit point onto France Street and the entry point from Kaiwaka Place
Painting new road markings and signs to support the upgraded crossing.
Planting new grass berms next to the crossing.
Reconstructing parts of the footpath for the new tactile pavers and grass berms. This gives more space for people to safely wait to cross.
We need to clear access and re-allocate road space by removing three on-street parking to improve visibility coming around corners.

Benefits and impacts
A raised crossing improves visibility by ensuring people crossing can be seen by approaching motorists.
Raising the crossing to the level of the footpath will alert drivers to slow on approach and to expect lots of people crossing the road here.
Makes it more comfortable for everyone, including people with prams and wheelchairs, to cross the road as the crossing is level with the footpath.
