We thank everyone who provided feedback on our proposal to improve parking availability on Galway Street, Onehunga.

After carefully reviewing the feedback, we will proceed with no changes to the proposal. This includes:

  • Introduce P120 (2-hour) time restriction between the driveways of 36 and 38 Galway Street.
  • The P120 time restriction will apply Monday to Saturday, 8am-9pm. Outside these hours, the spaces will be unrestricted parking.


What happens next


We anticipate these changes will be installed by October 2026.

We received five submissions in total, with most respondents supporting the proposal:

  • This proposal will free up short term parking spots for our students to park safely in front of our studio when attending classes at our premises. Currently, in peak times and when there are no places on the street in front of 36 Galway St, some students have to park a distance away and walk which, for our seniors’ community, is most unsuitable. No further suggestion, we appreciate AT listening to our concerns and working to help the businesses along Galway Street.
  • Allow elderly dance students to safely access dance classes.
  • My elderly dance students would more easily be able to get to their dance classes.

Effectiveness of proposal


  • Concern that the proposed P120 time restriction may not be an effective solution to the issue.
  • Suggestion to mark standard parking bays to better organise parking - This would improve parking organisation and traffic flow and reduce obstruction.


Current issues in the area:

  • The road is narrow, making it difficult when large trucks are parked
  • Parked trucks can obstruct traffic and cause congestion
  • Large trucks create more disruption than smaller passenger vehicles


AT Response: While heavy vehicles parked on-street can sometimes be inconvenient, there is no law preventing heavy vehicles from parking on public roads, and we cannot restrict parking based solely on vehicle type.

We have considered your suggestion to install marked parking bays. However, broken yellow lines were recently installed along a section of Galway Street between Neilson Street and Princes Street to address access issues caused by vehicles parking on both sides of the road.

These changes help maintain access for larger vehicles

At this time, we consider the proposed P120 parking restriction to be the most appropriate solution to improve parking turnover and increase parking availability for visitors to local businesses.

Therefore, we will not be progressing with the installation of marked parking bays as part of this project.



Concern about reduced parking availability


AT Response: Currently, there are no time restrictions in place, meaning vehicles can park for an unlimited period, which can reduce parking turnover and availability. However, the proposed P120 time restrictions will increase turnover and improve parking availability by limiting parking to a maximum stay of 120 minutes.



Parking restriction duration and extent


  • Request to increase parking time lime from 2 hours to 3 hours and extend the restriction along the full length of Galway Street (between Neilson Street and Princes Street)


AT Response: The section of Galway Street between Princes Street and Neilson Street is zoned Business – Heavy Industry. Given the industrial nature of the area and the need to support a range of businesses, a parking time restriction is proposed along this section of the road to balance parking turnover with the operational needs of surrounding businesses.

Therefore, we do not propose extending the parking restriction to the full length of Galway Street at this stage. However, we will continue to monitor the situation and may consider extending the restriction in the future if warranted.

We have also considered your suggestion to increase the parking time limit from P120 (2 hours) to P180 (3 hours). However, a longer time limit would reduce parking turnover and, consequently, decrease parking availability for other users. For this reason, we will not make any changes to the proposed parking time restriction at this stage.



  • Suggestion to increase the time limit to 3–4 hours.


AT Response: We have considered your suggestion to increase the parking time limit to P180 (3 hours) or P240 (4 hours). However, a longer parking time limit would reduce parking turnover (the rate at which parked vehicles are replaced by other vehicles), resulting in fewer parking spaces being available for other users throughout the day.

For this reason, we will not make any changes to the proposed parking time restriction at this stage.



  • Suggestion to extend the proposed P120 parking restriction to include the area outside 34 Galway Street and to operate on Sundays: businesses at 36 Galway Street operate seven days a week and require additional on-street parking to accommodate customer demand due to limited on-site parking.


AT Response: The P120 time restrictions proposed outside 36/38 Galway Street will apply from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM, Monday to Saturday. We believe the proposed days and hours adequately meet the needs of the businesses located at 36 Galway Street.

The businesses located at 36 Galway Steet are closed on Sundays. Therefore, we do not believe there to be sufficient demand to apply the time restriction on Sundays.

The section of Galway Street between Princes Street and Neilson Street is zoned Business – Heavy Industry. Given the industrial nature of the area and the need to support a variety of businesses, a time restriction is proposed along this section of the road to balance parking turnover with the operational needs of surrounding businesses.

Therefore, we will not propose extending the time restriction outside 34 Galway Street at this stage.

However, we will continue to monitor the situation and may consider extending the restriction in the future if there is evidence that additional restrictions are required.
