Cornwallis St changes
Consultation has concluded
Consultation outcome
After reviewing the feedback we received, we are proceeding with the proposal of installing bus parking spaces and broken yellow lines at the end of the street to enable large vehicles to safely turn around. This will result in a reduction of some on street parking for general vehicles.
What happens next
These changes will be installed before 17 November 2024.

About the project
Aucklanders have told us that moving around our city safely and easily is important to them so we are making changes to bus services that requires some buses to start and finish at St Lukes.
A new frequent bus service between St Lukes and Newmarket via Mt Eden and the increase in frequency to the existing 650 crosstown bus service means we need space to park buses between trips and while drivers take their breaks.
What we are proposing
We need to create a place for bus drivers to take a break between trips so we plan to create spaces for buses on Cornwallis St by:
- Replacing some on-street vehicle parking with a space to park two buses on the eastern side of Cornwallis St
- Removing some on-street vehicle parking on the northern end of the street to allow buses to turn around safely
Note that buses will not collect or drop off passengers from Cornwallis St. The nearest bus stops for passengers will be the existing bus stops on St Lukes Road.
Why we are proposing it
Aucklanders tell us they want a better public transport system that is convenient, well-connected, accessible and reliable. Auckland Transport (AT) is on a mission to:
- increase public transport use to reduce congestion
- improve access for Aucklanders
- support the economy and enhance the environment.
Buses can move more people while using less space and new frequent bus services that start and finish at St Lukes are being introduced later this year. These bus services will be able to move more people more often throughout the day, seven days a week to make St Lukes easier to get to and more accessible. This will work towards reducing the number of vehicles on the road and providing more parking for those who need it.
Cornwallis Street is a suitable location to park buses because this space is not directly outside houses where they could disturb people. This is especially important early in the morning and late at night.
Following a previous consultation in 2020 we have revised our plans. We have been able to reduce the space needed for bus parking and leave more on-street parking on Cornwallis St.
Benefits & Impacts
Benefits
- This change provides a place for bus drivers to take a break between trips.
- It is away from residential houses and so is less likely to disturb residents especially early in the mornings and late at nights.
Impacts
- Some on-street vehicle parking will be removed.
