About the Project

Howick Local Board has identified Cook Street and Gibraltar Street as a location for pedestrian safety improvements. On their behalf, Auckland Transport (AT) is proposing the following

Proposed changes

  • Install a pedestrian refuge island on Cook Street,
  • Upgrading the corners on Gibraltar Street with kerb ramps, which help people with strollers or wheelchairs move easily between the footpath and the road.
  • Relocate the bus stop to increase visibility for drivers and pedestrians
  • Paint new road markings, including a flush median, and broken yellow lines (no stopping at all times)
  • Install a new section of footpath to connect the pram crossing on Cook St to Stevenson Reserve
  • Some on-street parking will be removed to increase visibility for pedestrians

22 on-street car parks will be removed or repurposed to increase visibility for pedestrians

Benefits of this project

  • Improved pedestrian safety
  • Lower vehicle speeds
  • Improved pedestrian facilities
  • Improved bus stop amenity
  • New footpath connection on Stevenson Reserve
