Carruth Road and Victoria Road Intersection Improvement Project
About the project
Making the Carruth Road and Victoria Road intersection safer for all road users!
This project is part of Auckland Transport's High-Risk Intersections Programme, a safety improvement programme that prioritises safety interventions at high-risk intersections in Auckland.
Between 2019 and 2023, 21 crashes have been reported at this intersection, resulting in eight minor injuries, with 86% attributed to drivers failing to give way to the main traffic on Carruth Road. Of the 21 crashes that have occurred in this timeframe, 18 involved drivers failing to give way. Site investigations identified that many drivers, particularly on Carruth Road, approach the intersection at speed. Observations also found long queues for vehicles turning right or continuing straight from Victoria Road and Birdwood Avenue. These conditions often lead to drivers accepting smaller gaps in traffic, increasing the risk of collisions.
We are Proposing the following safety improvements at the intersection:
The proposal is expected to significantly reduce the likelihood of crashes at the intersection. It is also expected to improve safety and amenities for pedestrians in the area. The proposed treatment includes:
Installing a roundabout at the intersection, including traffic islands
Installing new road markings and signage to accommodate the new roundabout
Reconstructing the footpath
Installing new pram crossings on all approaches
Benefits and Impacts
The roundabout will slow vehicle speeds and allow for safer crossing and turning movements
The pedestrian refuge islands will provide pedestrians with a safe waiting space while crossing the road
Parking changes will involve reprioritising eight parking spaces and painting broken yellow lines to provide queueing spaces for vehicles, and to ensure pedestrians crossing the road can see approaching vehicles.
