Consultation has concluded
Project background
Everyone across Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland should be able to get to where they need to and back home safely. This includes people in cars, on bikes, on foot, on scooters, or on mobility devices.
The Brighton Road and St Stephens Avenue intersection is a high-risk intersection. There were nine recorded crashes at this intersection between 2018 and 2022. The impact of these injuries on friends, Whānau and the wider community is immeasurable.
Proposed changes
Aerial view of the proposed changes
We’re proposing to upgrade the Brighton Road and St Stephens Avenue Intersection
This will include:
Raising the entire intersection to encourage slower speeds.
Installing traffic lights at all approaches to the intersection.
Sychronising the proposed traffic lights with the traffic lights on Parnell Road.
Installing crossings for people who walk and cycle.
Installing yellow tactile pavers at key crossing points to help visually impaired people find their way to the crossing.
Painting new road markings and signage to support the changes.
Relocating the bus stops on St Stephens Avenue further east from the intersection.
We also propose to improve the existing cycling facilities
This will include:
Cycleway separators and bypass to protect people from traffic.
Painting advanced stop boxes for waiting at the intersection.
Shared spaces for people on bikes turning through the intersection.
reduce the risk of death and serious injuries caused by motorists failing to give way
enable people walking or cycling to cross safely at this busy intersection
make it safer to cycle through this area
making it easier and safer for drivers to turn into and out of Brighton Road
increase the rate of survival in the event of an accident by encouraging slower speeds.
The proposed changes would reduce 17 on-street parking spaces on St Stephens Avenue. If people need to park here, there is parking further along on St Stephens Avenue, Corunna Avenue, and Brighton Road.
The trees outside 17 and 20 St Stephens Avenue would need to be removed to provide enough space on the footpath for people getting on and off the bus.

More Information
Why are we proposing these changes?
The proposed changes are part of Auckland Transport's High Risk Intersection Programme and supports Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland's commitment to Vision Zero.
Due to the importance of improving this high-risk intersection, discontinuing the project will only be considered if the public raises major safety issues we are currently unaware of.
Funding
This proposal is supported with funding from the Auckland regional fuel tax and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency.
