About the project

We are committed to enhancing our customers' experience on public transport. To improve services in your area, we will be making a change to the 191 bus route from June 2026.

Thanks to the new signalised intersection at Ash Street and Wairau Road, the bus will be able to turn into and out of Wairau Road instead of having to double back on itself to Rosebank Road. (See image 1 below). This will also mean the bus will travel in both directions on parts of Riversdale Road, Maple Street and Avondale Road, where it previously only went in one direction.

Changes we propose to make by June 2026

The changed bus route (turning into/out of Wairau Ave between Ash St and Riversdale Rd) will require two new bus stops, and the removal of two existing bus stops. We want your feedback on the following four proposals:

  1. We’re proposing a new bus stop at 5/7/9 Wairau Avenue. This will mean road markings for a bus stop, footpath improvement with new tactile pavers, and a bus stop sign as shown below in Image 2 (See also PDF to the right in documents section).
  2. We’re proposing to move the existing unused bus stop at 12 Wairau Avenue (corner 52 Canal Rd) and relocating this bus stop to opposite 17 Wairau Avenue (63 Canal Rd). This will mean removal of the sign at 12 Wairau Avenue, and for opposite 17 Wairau Avenue (63 Canal Rd) new road markings for a bus stop, footpath improvement with new tactile pavers, a bus stop sign, and bus shelter, as shown below in Image 2 (See also PDF to the right in documents section).
  3. We’re proposing installation of new tactile pavers on the corners at the intersection of Wairau Avenue and Canal Road, and no stopping at all times yellow line road markings on Canal Road approaching the intersection. See below in Image 2 (See also PDF to the right in documents section).

4. We’re proposing removal of the bus stop and shelter outside 34/36 Riversdale Road as the bus will no longer pass this stop once the route changes in June 2026. See Image 3 (See also PDF to the right in documents section).

Benefits to the community

The changes to the 191 bus service, and other services in the area (read more: West Auckland bus improvements) will mean better public transport connections - enabling what matters to Aucklanders: a convenient, well-connected, accessible transport system. More regular and reliable services mean quicker, easier and safer journeys for people in the area.

This improvement will remove unnecessary complication as currently the bus heads to two different destinations (New Lynn or Blockhouse Bay) from the same bus stops. This change will make the bus service less confusing and less prone to people mistakenly getting on the wrong bus giving people more confidence about using the bus.
