About the project

Upcoming Changes to Pedestrian Crossing Facilities Across 842 Dominion Road!

We’re planning to install a new pedestrian crossing facility across 842 Dominion Road. Dominion Road is one of Auckland’s busiest routes, and we regularly hear from people that crossing the road here feels difficult and unsafe.

This project was initiated in response to feedback from local community about safety concerns related to lack of dedicated pedestrian crossing facility in the area.

The project proposes installing a new signalised crossing across 842 Dominion Road, along with new high‑friction surfacing and a shortened bus stop aligned with the new crossing to improve overall safety and accessibility. As a result, a total of five parking spaces will be removed, and an updated P60 time restriction will be introduced on Calgary Street.

What we’re planning to do before June 2027:

  • Install a signalised pedestrian crossing across 842 Dominion Road.
  • Install high-friction surfacing on either approach to the new crossing and red marking over the crosswalk
  • Remove existing refuge island.
  • Reinstate the footpath near the refuge island.
  • Shorten the existing bus stop
  • Remove 5 on street carparks to make space for these safety improvements.
  • Update the existing P10 parking to P60 parking on Calgary Street.

You can view the proposed changes in the attached plan.

How this will benefit your neighborhood:

These upgrades are about making every day journeys safer and less stressful - whether you’re walking or driving through the area.

  • Gives people a safe, signal-controlled crossing so they don’t have to take risks to find a gap to cross the road in heavy traffic.
  • Creates safer and more direct connections to local shops, bus stops, and community facilities, making the area more reachable and connected.
  • Improves visibility between drivers and pedestrians, ensuring a safer environment for children and residents.

We want to hear your feedback on:

  • Any specific local knowledge, operational issues or suggestions that may help to refine the proposed design.
