Consultation Outcome

We want to thank the community of Manukau Road for their engagement and feedback on our proposal to improve road safety by installing a pedestrian crossing outside 740 Manukau Road.

After reviewing the feedback we received, we are proceeding with no changes.

What happens next

We will anticipate implementing these changes early 2025. We will be in touch with the residents and businesses prior to confirmed construction start dates.

The work will include

  • Installing a pedestrian crossing outside 740 Manukau Road
  • Installing a pedestrian refuge island in the middle to break up the crossing journey into two stages which will also lessen the impact on traffic.
  • The bus stop outside 754 Manukau Road will be shifted a few meters south to accommodate the crossing, and the kerb near the bus stop will also be extended. This will result in the removal of two parking spaces.

About the project

Many Royal Oak locals and visitors want to cross Manukau Road outside the Royal Oak Mall entrance, but there are no crossing facilities.

There have been two serious crashes involving a pedestrian trying to cross at this location between 2018 and 2022.

We’re looking to make it easier and safer for people to cross Manukau Road outside the Royal Oak Mall and bus stop servicing the 30 and N10 routes.

What we are proposing

  • Painting a pedestrian crossing outside 740 Manukau Road.
  • Installing pedestrian refuge islands in the middle of the crossing to break up the crossing journey into two stages which will also lessen the impact on traffic.
  • Shifting the bus stop outside 754 Manukau Road south to support the changes. The footpath outside the new bus stop will also be extended.

  • There is high pedestrian demand outside 740 Manukau Road from people visiting local shops or taking the bus, so we want to make it safer to cross here.
  • Installing a zebra crossing with a pedestrian island provides everyone, particularly vulnerable members of our community, such as our elderly and parents with children, a designated place to cross the road.
  • Two parking spaces will be removed in total to support the pedestrian improvements.
