About the project

We are improving pedestrian safety on Veronica Street, New Lynn

In July 2022, due to safety concerns for people walking in the area, we asked for your feedback on our proposal to install a raised zebra crossing on Veronica Street in New Lynn.

After reviewing all the community feedback, we’ve taken on-board the further concerns raised by the community and we’re making changes to our design.

What we’re proposing

Proposed changes:

  • Installing a new crossing that is controlled by traffic lights and includes speed humps on the approach of Veronica Street, New Lynn.
  • We’re also widening the footpath near the crossing to allow enough room for people to wait to cross safely. See the drawings attached.

Why we are proposing it

  • A traffic light controlled (signalised) crossing is to help manage traffic on a busy road and gives priority to people on foot. Motorists must stop at a red traffic light to allow people walking to cross.
  • They must wait until people have crossed safely and the traffic light turns green before they can continue on their journey.
  • The lights at the crossing will only stop traffic when people need to cross by pushing the button. Timing will be optimized to allow enough time for people to cross safely but also minimise the impact on Veronica Street.

Benefits of this proposal

  • It will give more people walking priority to cross a busy road safely as traffic must stop
  • People crossing are more visible to motorists and people can get around New Lynn faster and safer
  • Reduction in harm or death between motorists and people walking
  • Low impact on traffic flow as crossing time is only activated when someone needs to cross
  • Allows people to safely cross the road and access local amenities.

Proposal Outcome

After reviewing all of the feedback we received, this project will proceed without changes.

Community Concerns

Concerns that speed bumps impact traffic.

Auckland Transport (AT) has adopted the Safe System approach which targets all elements of road safety for all road users. This is a transport system that is built for human beings, that acknowledges that people make mistakes and human bodies are vulnerable to high-impact forces in the event of a crash.

The inclusion of speed humps in this proposal are a physical measure to reduce speeds (to about 25 – 30kph) through the crossing which is important in the event someone mistakenly runs a red light and hits a pedestrian. If a pedestrian is hit by a car at 30km/h without protection, there is a 10 percent risk of death, at 50km/h that risk of death increases to 80 percent.

We want a transport system that prioritises safety, not a system that puts other measures ahead of human life.

Concerns that the bus stop will cause more congestion and it should be removed.

The boarding and particularly the alighting numbers at this location indicate a significant number of users interact with this stop. For this reason, we would not look at the removal given the existing demand.

Concerns that the crossing and speed humps will slow people down.

The crossing issue on Veronica St has been raised/identified by members of the local community as well as the Whau Local Board.

Pedestrian observations and surveys verified the relatively high crossing demand at this location which currently has no safe pedestrian facility in place.

There have been four crashes reported over the last five years within the vicinity of the proposed crossing on Veronica Street. This includes a serious pedestrian injury crash involving a pedestrian being struck while crossing Veronica Street.
