Streets for People - Onewherowhero (Kelston)

During the summer holidays, we installed temporary changes to the street along St Leonards Road and outside Kelston Girls’ College.

These changes have been shaped by the ideas and insights of your local school community. Over the past few months, we've worked alongside teachers, parents, and students from Kelston's schools to find out how they thought we could improve the streets around them.

Trialling these changes allows the whole community to experience them and have their say. Compared to traditional transport projects, the changes are low-cost and low-risk. This allows our project team to better understand the wants and needs of the local community before making any permanent changes.

What happens next?

Feedback on the trial street changes closed on the 14th of April.

So far, we've collected survey responses, had conversations at community events and with stakeholders, observed the trial in use, and collected data from tube counters. Now, we will start to analyse these findings.

The outcome of the trial will be announced following its completion in June 2024.

What are the trial changes?

To make it easier and safer for the community, especially school children, to get around, we have:

• Installed planter boxes and flexi-posts along St Leonards Road to encourage slower speeds and increase safety for students who walk and cycle to school.
• Installed a temporary pedestrian island to improve safety for people crossing the top of Vanguard Road.
• Reinforced existing no-parking zones and encouraged slow-turning traffic at the intersections of St Leonards Road with Barbary Avenue, Vanguard Road, and Bamboo Groove.
• Removed six parking spaces along St Leonards Road to improve visibility in areas frequently accessed by children.
• Installed wheel stops in front of the St Leonards shops to stop cars from driving onto the footpath.
• Installed speed cushions on Bamboo Grove to slow speeds and improve safety for those crossing the road.
• Installed a permanent pram ramp with tactile pavers on Bamboo Grove to make it safer for those crossing.
• Reinforced the existing no-parking areas outside Kelston Girls' College so it is easier to see people crossing the road.

Archibald Park pop-up pump track

Have you visited the pop-up pump track in Archibald Park? It's right across from the playground and is the perfect spot for people of all ages to give it a go on their bike or scooter.

The pump track has art from local photographer Damen Doom with design from Ahutoa Leauga-Lanefale curated by Whau the People!

Community Corner

We are excited to inform you that the pop-up Community Corner has been installed! The corner is a pop-up space that features students' artwork from the surrounding local schools, celebrating the Kelston community and includes information about the Streets for People project.
The site is located on the corner of St Leonards Rd and Bamboo Grove, the same spot as the weekly Tuesday Bike Kitchen, and it will be in place for the next one to two months.

Project benefits

This project aims to support an increase in safe walking and cycling by:

• Making the streets safer and more enjoyable places to be in.
• Empowering students and the school community to participate in designing, implementing, and assessing changes.

What happens now?

The feedback received from the community during the trial will help inform possible future changes to the street. This survey will be open for your feedback until the 14th of April. The outcome of the trial will be announced following its completion in June 2024.
