Consultation has concluded
Project background
Everyone across Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland should be able to get to where they need to and back home safely. This includes people in cars, on bikes, on foot, on scooters, or on mobility devices.
The Opaheke Road and Chapel Street intersection is a high-risk intersection. Between 2018 to 2022 there were 12 crashes here. The impact of these injuries on friends, Whānau and the wider community is immeasurable.
Proposed changes
Aerial view of the proposed changes
We’re proposing to raise the intersection and put in place a new roundabout
This will include:
raising the intersection to encourage slower speeds
installing a new roundabout with a mountable centre to reduce the likelihood of intersection accidents
painting zebra crossings and installing streetlights near the roundabout to enable people to cross safely at all times
realigning the driveway of number 6 and 9 Opaheke Road
installing yellow tactile pavers at key crossing points to help visually impaired people find their way to the crossing
relocating the AT Metro bus parking bay on Chapel Street further east
painting new road markings and installing signage to support the changes.
make it safer for motorists to navigate this intersection
enable large vehicles and busses turning to travel over the centre if required
make it safer for people to cross here at all times
encourage slower speeds which enable a higher chance of survival in the event of an accident.
The proposed changes to make the intersection safer would remove 11 unrestricted on-street parking spaces and 2 P90 parking spaces.

More Information
Why are we proposing these changes?
The proposed changes are part of Auckland Transport's High Risk Intersection Programme and supports Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland's commitment to Vision Zero.
Due to the importance of improving this high-risk intersection, discontinuing the project will only be considered if the public raises major safety issues we are currently unaware of.
Funding
This proposal is supported with funding the Auckland regional fuel tax and Road to Zero Program.
