Will parking be removed?

No parking will be removed. The additional bus lane is being added by repurposing the flush median in the middle of the road.

How will I turn right into my street?

If you are driving into or out of Oakley Avenue, Alverston Street or Fairlands Avenue in the morning peak, you will need to drive one block further to the traffic lights at Fir St, Alford St or Herdman St to turn right. There are traffic lights approximately 130m to 230m apart along this stretch of road.

How much further do I have to walk when the pedestrian crossing islands are removed?

Two pedestrian crossing islands will be removed from the flush median. Surveys showed this would impact 27 pedestrians in the morning peak. The majority (115) already cross the road at signalised intersections. The pedestrian islands are roughly 70-80m from the traffic signals.

What is a gantry and where will it be?

A gantry is the signpost with the electronic signs over each lane to show when the dynamic lane is active.

Seven gantries will be installed along Great North Rd. Three of these will be adjacent to residential properties. Wherever possible the gantries will be designed to essentially be extended streetlights to minimize the visual impact of adding them to the road. These kinds of signs are not considered out of the ordinary/unexpected to add to a main arterial road.

Can I drive in the bus lane outside of the morning peak?

Yes. When the dynamic lane is active, the bus lane will have a ‘B’ sign above it, which shows it is active as a bus lane. When it is not active, it will change to a green arrow which means you can drive in it.

How does the lane change direction? Is there a safety risk?

While the lane is changing direction, the middle lane shows a yellow arrow and then a red X southbound for five minutes to ensure the lane is clear before it switches. It is also monitored during the change-over by the Auckland Transport Operations Centre.
