Project update: July 2026

Construction of a new zebra crossing with a pedestrian island was completed in March 2026.

Other work completed include:

  • Extending the east corner of the Arranmore Drive and Flat Bush School Road intersection to make left turns slower.
  • Installing yellow tactile pavers to help visually impaired individuals find their way to the new crossing.
  • Building a footpath on the south side of Flat Bush School Road.
  • Painting the cycle lanes green.
  • Adding broken yellow lines (no stopping any time) on both sides of the road near the crossing to ensure drivers and pedestrians have a clear view. This removed 11 on-street parking spaces.
  • Installing new signs and streetlights and painting new road markings to support the new crossing.

Project history

In March 2022, we asked the community for feedback on our plan to make it safer for pedestrians, especially schoolkids, to cross Flat Bush School Road at the Arranmore Drive intersection.

Most respondents supported the proposed crossing and felt it was necessary or overdue. Some suggested additional changes, while others had concerns about traffic flow.

We decided to move forward with the proposed improvements. However, after reviewing our approach to speed calming and, more importantly, listening to you, we have changed our proposal to a zebra crossing at the road level instead.

Updated proposed design February 2025:

In February, we revisited a zebra pedestrian crossing proposal for Flat Bush School Road.

We updated the original 2022 proposal, in particular changing the raised zebra crossing to a road-level crossing instead.

Following public engageement, the updated proposal was approved for construction.
