Thanks to the Rodney Local Board Capital Transport Fund, we will be improving the zebra crossing outside Mahurangi College in early 2026. The new crossing facilities will ensure our tamariki, school whānau, and local community can cross safely in groups, reducing traffic disruptions during busy times.

The changes we’re making in Jan/Feb 2026:

  • Upgrading the current zebra crossing outside Mahurangi College to a traffic-light-controlled crossing to allow people to cross safely in larger groups without causing traffic disruptions.
  • Installing a high-friction road surface to reduce speed and improve skid resistance on the approach to the crossing, especially in wet weather.
  • Installing new yellow tactile pavers at the crossing points to help visually impaired people cross safely.
  • Painting new road markings to alert motorists that they are approaching a traffic-light-controlled crossing.
  • Upgrading the footpath on either side of the crossing to provide more space for pedestrians to wait.
  • Installing a new pram crossing to make it safer and more convenient for people pushing prams or strollers, and to assist those with mobility needs.
  • Repairing the footpath and kerb on the southern side of the road, leading up to the crossing - This ensures the footpath is upgraded to current safety standards.
  • Regarding the grass berm, it will be completed to match the grass berm smoothly with the new concrete infrastructure.
  • Installing a new pedestrian fence on the northern side of the crossing ensures that pedestrians do not cut across the crossing path.
  • Extending the yellow hatching (keep clear) line marking outside the school entrance ensures that buses have a clear way to use when leaving or entering the school.

Benefits to your community:

  • Easier for everyone. The crossing will make it safer and more accessible for tamariki, school whānau, and the local community with different accessibility needs to cross safely.
  • Enhances your health and well-being by encouraging outdoor activities. It provides better access to nearby parks, schools, public transport, and other local amenities.
  • Fosters community connections – Demonstrates a commitment to the safety of the entire school community and nearby residents.
  • Crossing in groups reduces disruption to motorists travelling through the area.
  • Keeps our tamariki safe – Protects students walking to and from school by calming traffic and alerting drivers to reduce their speed near schools.

What happens next:

  • We will be in touch with residents before any work takes place.
  • Any change to the plan will be updated on our website.
