Project Update May 4, 2026.
In June 2025, we engaged with Stanmore Bay residents about the planned signalisation of an existing crossing at 416 Whangaparāoa Road. The crossing is well used, and the planned changes will make it safer for everyone.
Following feedback, we have made a minor change to the design. The previously proposed side islands that come out from the footpath will not be installed. This change will mean cyclists can travel along the route without the islands obstructing them. No other changes have been made.
Previously we advised work would take place in March 2026, but due to this design change, work will now start in September 2026.
A larger updated drawing of the design can be found to the right of this page labelled Design 2 at 416 Whangaparāoa Road in Stanmore Bay.
If you have any questions or comments on the planned changes, please email us at:

Engagement Outcome
The engagement for this project has finished and is planned for construction in 2026.
About this project
We want to improve the crossing facilities outside 416 Whangaparāoa Road in Stanmore Bay. Whangaparāoa Road is a busy street where many residents need to cross safely, including a walking school bus by Stanmore Bay School students and the elderly at a nearby retirement home. Currently, people are using an existing crossing island to access bus services on the opposite side of the road, to connect them to various locations within Whangaparāoa and other parts of Auckland. We want to provide the community with safe, convenient, well-connected walking options to enjoy local amenities and get to and from school safely.
The changes we’re making in February/March 2026:
Install a new traffic light-controlled crossingoutside 416 Whangaparāoa Road to give priority to those who cross the road, whether on foot or by bike, when the light is green.
Upgrade and extend the footpathand kerb outside 416 Whangaparāoa Road to provide more room and a safe area to wait before crossing the road.
Install pram crossings, making it safer and more convenient for people pushing prams or strollers and ensuring those with mobility needs can navigate crossings more easily.
Install a high-friction road surface to reduce speed and improve skid resistance on approach to the crossing, especially in wet weather.
Install new yellow tactile pavers at the crossing points to help visually impaired people safely cross the road
Paint no stopping at all times (broken yellow lines) near 441 Whangaparāoa Road. We need to clear access and visibility on all approaches to the crossing by re-allocating road space by removing 4 parking spaces.
Install new signs and paint new road markings so motorists know they are approaching a traffic-light-controlled crossing
Benefits to your community:
Improves safety for everyone with different accessibility needs and reduces speed in the area.
Encourages drivers to slow down and take extra care when approaching the crossing and improves visibility between motorists and people crossing the road.
There would be a low impact on traffic flow as the crossing is only activated when someone pushes the button
Walking is good for the environment and good for your health. It helps reduce reliance on cars for local trips, decreasing traffic congestion and reducing our carbon emissions.
New road markings and signsclarify right of way, improve safety by minimising the risk of collisions, and ensure compliance with traffic regulations.
What happens next:
We will be in touch with residents before any construction takes place.
Any change to the plan will be updated on our website.
Feedback for this project has now closed. Thank you.
