About the project

Safety improvements at the Weymouth Road and Rowandale Avenue intersection

  1. We want to make Weymouth Road safer and easier for everyone in the community, so we’re rolling out safety improvements step by step.
  2. Weymouth Road, between Roscommon Road and Friedlander Road has seen a lot of crashes in recent years, making it a high-risk area. From 2020 to 2024, there were 44 crashes, seven caused serious injuries and 12 resulted in minor injuries. Over a third of these were due to vehicles losing control, and three involved pedestrians. More recently, from 2025 to 2026, another 10 crashes were reported, including three serious and four minor injuries.
  3. Our first step is to build a new roundabout at the Weymouth Road and Rowandale Avenue intersection. We chose this intersection because lots of people walk here, with nearby schools, sports fields, and bus stops bringing many pedestrians. The roundabout will help slow down vehicles, make turning safer and easier, and improve safety for drivers, people walking, and cyclists.
  4. After the roundabout is finished, we will keep an eye on how things go and look at whether more safety improvements are needed for other parts of Weymouth Road in future stages.

What we’re planning to do before June 2027

Here is what we are proposing to make the Weymouth Road and Rowandale Avenue intersection safer and easier for everyone to get around:

  • A new mountable roundabout
  • Upgraded pedestrian refuge island on Weymouth Road and Rowandale Avenue
  • Side islands on Weymouth Road to help guide vehicles safely into the roundabout
  • Realign a nearby vehicle driveway to support the new roundabout
  • A design that is safe for buses and trucks
  • No loss of parking

You can view the proposed layout in the attached plans.

How this will benefit your neighbourhood

These improvements will help make the intersection safer and more convenient for everyone using the area. Key benefits include:

  • Safer speeds through the intersection
  • Safer and easier to turn, especially from Rowandale Avenue
  • Better and safer crossing points for people walking
  • A clearer and safer road layout for the community
  • No changes to parking

Because this is a small upgrade focused on safety, we don’t expect any significant long-term disruption for locals or people passing through.

What happens next

We want to hear your feedback on:

  • Any specific local knowledge, operational issues or suggestions that may help to refine the proposed design

Please fill out the survey on our website if you would like to share local knowledge, show your support for the project, or let us know if we have missed anything. Alternatively, email us at engagementfeedback@johnstaff.co.nz. Please use “Weymouth–Rowandale Intersection” in the subject line.

We would love to hear your feedback up until 15 May 2026.
