Consultation Outcome
In February 2024, Auckland Transport proposed paid parking restrictions in Westgate, to manage parking usage in the area.
We received 747 pieces of feedback, and thank the community for sharing their support, concerns, and suggestions on the proposal.
After reviewing the feedback, we will be proceeding with our proposal with afew changes. Please click on Public feedback report to see a detailed summary of the feedback received and our responses.
The changes are:
We will be extending the paid parking on Rotu Drive at $1/hour.
No stopping off roadway restriction to prevent the road users from parking on berms on Tawhia Drive, Gunton Drive, Maki Street, Kohuhu Lane, Barbour Road, Rotu Drive and Kedgley Drive.
Next Steps
We anticipate the changes will be introduced in June/July 2024.
The work we will do to introduce paid parking will include:
Installing 20 paid parking machines on Tawhia Drive, Gunton Drive, Maki Street, Kohuhu Lane, Barbour Road, Rotu Drive and Kedgley Drive.
Installing signage to indicate where the paid parking machines are located.
7 days before the changes are live – display boards will be installed to inform the community of the change.
We will be in touch with the businesses before the changes take place to ensure everyone is familiar and acquainted with the paid parking changes.
Paid parking areas, Westgate
Project background
Westgate has undergone significant residential and commercial developments in the recent years with the opening of Te Manawa, Northwest shopping centre, and Costco. This has resulted in more people visiting the area leading to an increased demand for parking.
Current parking layout in the area:
Large retailers and retail parks in the area provide parking for their customers (Northwest Shopping Centre, Westgate Lifestyle Shopping Centre, Costco, Pak’n Save, Mitre10 Mega and Bunnings). This means customers can park for free while they are shopping at these respective retailers.
The library and community centre have a car park, but it is at full capacity most of the time. It is time-restricted and for the use of the Te Manawa customers only.
Wilson parking is available on Fernhill Drive and Maki Street at competitive rates.
With more developments underway, we expect to see an increase in the number of people living, working and shopping at Westgate.
We need to consider the needs of the people who want to use the on-street parking options at Westgate whilst maximising the use of our assets. We started investigating different options to produce the best long-term solution to cater to the parking needs of increasing population in the Westgate area.
We are proposing to:
Introduce paid parking on Tawhia Drive, Gunton Drive, Maki Street and Kohuhu Lane - the proposed charges are $1/hour.
Introduce paid parking on Barbour Road, Maki Street and Kedgley Drive - the proposed charges are $0.50/hour.
