About the project
Making the West Street, Harris Street intersection safer for all road users!
This project is part of Auckland Transport's High-Risk Intersection programme, a safety improvement programme that prioritises safety interventions at high-risk intersections in Auckland.
Between 2020 and 2024, seven crashes occurred at this intersection, resulting in three minor injuries and four non-injury crashes.
A pedestrian survey in August 2024 showed significant crossing activity at this roundabout, including many students from Pukekohe Intermediate School. Currently, only pedestrian refuge islands are provided on each leg of the roundabout. Auckland Transport has also received public requestsseekingfor improved pedestrian facilities at this location. The crash history, combined with high pedestrian demand, highlights the need for safety upgrades at this roundabout with a focus on pedestrians.
We are proposing the following safety improvements:
Installing new at-grade zebra crossing on all legs of the roundabout.
Installing high friction surfacing on all legs of the roundabout.
Installing “Slow” road marking on all approaches to the roundabout.
Installing speed indicator device (also known as driver feedback sign) on the West Street east leg of the roundabout.
Upgrade the existing traffic islands and install new signs and markings to accommodate the proposed zebra crossings.
Loss of three parking spaces on West Street outside #64 and one parking space on Helvetia Road outside #1.
Removal of redundant ramp outside #99 Harris Street.
The proposal is expected to significantly reduce the likelihood of crashes at the intersection and reduce vehicle speeds in the area. It is also expected to significantly improve safety and amenities for pedestrians in the area.
Benefits and Impacts
New pedestrian crossings will enable pedestrians to cross more safely and more easily.
High friction surfacing and a driver feedback sign will increase drivers’ awareness and encourage more appropriate speeds and reduce the risk of crashes for all road users.
Reconstructed footpaths, ramps for prams or mobility scooters, and other upgrades will make it easier for families to get around.
Improved road markings and upgraded islands will help drivers navigate the roundabout more easily.
Parking changes will involve re-allocate road space by removing three on-road parking spaces on the east leg of West Street and one parking space on Helvetia Road (see plan for details) and painting broken yellow lines to provide queuing spaces for vehicles, ensuring that pedestrians crossing the road can see approaching vehicles clearly.
What we want your feedback on
Your input will help shape the final design and ensure it reflects the needs of the community.
