As part our road safety programme, we will be making Pohuehue Road near the intersection of Mahurangi West Road in Puhoi safer for all vehicles travelling through the area. This location is frequently used by heavy vehicles and construction trucks and has been identified as being a high risk for crashes, including drivers losing control or crossing the centre line, causing head-on collisions. The project aims to improve safety for all road users.
The changes we’re making in early 2026:
Install a new merge continuity line and extend the merge length to allow vehicles to safely move into one lane, as the number of lanes reduces.
Install rumble strips (also called Audio Tactile Pavement Markings) on the edge and centrelines. Rumble strips are small bumps as warning lines on the road to alert drivers that they need to act as they are leaving the road/lane and are proven ways to reduce the risk of head-on and run-off-road crashes
Install new red cat’s eyes (Red Reflective Raised Pavement Markers) along the edge of the road. These reflect light from car headlights, making the road edges easier to see at night around curves and help drivers stay on track especially at night and in bad weather.
A larger drawing can be found to the right of this page.
Benefits to your community:
Make the road safer by reducing the risk of head-on or run-off-road crashes.
Warn drivers early if they drift out of their lane by creating a sound and vibration inside the car.
Help drivers stay alert and aware, especially in poor visibility at night or in bad weather.
Rumble strips are a proven safety measure that provide markers you can see, hear, and feel, helping make Pohuehue Road safer for everyone
Improves safety for everyone using Pohuehue Road — drivers, passengers, and other road users.
What happens next:
We will be in touch with residents before any work takes place.
Any change to the plan will be updated on our website.
How to contact us:
If you’d like to discuss our plans, share what you know about your area or let us know if there’s anything we’ve missed, email us at ATEngagement@at.govt.nz or leave us a comment on our website by 12 November 2025.
