We’re responding to concerns raised by the community and local board to improve crossing safety near the Caltex Station at 297 West Coast Road, Glen Eden. We have listened to concerns that the current crossing island is not in a good location as it leads to the petrol station driveway on one side of the road, and a set of steps on the other.

Thanks to the Waitākere Ranges Local Board Transport Capital Fund, we’ll be installing a new crossing island West Coast Road to provide the community with a safer, more accessible crossing option and improving access to bus stops, homes and businesses.

The changes we're making by February 2026:

  • Remove existing crossing island located near the driveway of the petrol station. The crossing leads to the petrol station driveway on one side and a set of wooden stairs on the other side. These stairs cannot be used by people with accessibility needs, such as a pram, or wheelchair.
  • Install new crossing islands a little further down the road between the two driveways to the petrol station. This crossing islands are a small section of pavement within the median strip, surrounded by concrete. It helps people crossing to safely wait for a gap in traffic (while giving way to motorists) to finish crossing the road.
  • Install a new section of footpath on the side of the road opposite the petrol station to connect people who are walking with the new location to cross the road.
  • Install new yellow tactile pavers at the crossing points and bus stops to help visually impaired people locate the facility and safely cross the road.
  • Relocating the bus stop slightly to make space for the new crossing facilities. The location allows space for traffic to pass a bus stopped at the bus stop.
  • No changes to kerbside parking spaces.
  • Removal of a redundant driveway as it must be replaced with a berm.
  • New bus shelters subject to available funding

A detailed drawing of the changes can be downloaded from this website.

Benefits to your community:

  • Improves safety for everyone with different accessibility needs providing a safer facility to safely cross West Coast Road and access the bus stops, homes and businesses.
  • Encourages drivers to slow down and take extra care when approaching the crossing.
  • Better access and connections to public transport, helping with bus reliability and frequency.
  • Improves safety for those who are walking. Walking is good for the environment and good for your health. It helps reduce reliance on cars for local trips, decreasing traffic congestion and reducing our carbon emissions.

What happens next:

  • We will be in touch with residents before any work takes place.
  • Any change to the plan will be updated on our website.
