Consultation has concluded
About the project
Aucklanders have told us that moving around our city safely and easily is important to them so we are making changes to bus services that requires some buses to change how they operate around Walker Park in Pt Chevalier.
A new frequent bus service between St Lukes and Newmarket via Mt Eden and the increase in frequency to the existing 650 crosstown bus service means we need space to park buses between trips and while drivers take their breaks.
What we are proposing
The 650 bus service currently runs in a clockwise loop around Walker Park and we’re making changes that mean it will run in an anti-clockwise direction. This means we will need to relocate bus stops on Walker Road and Target Street to the opposite side of the road. To do this we will:
Remove the three existing bus stops on the north side of Target Street and replace them with one bus stop on the park side of Target Street. This stop will be where buses will finish and begin their trips. Buses will wait here before beginning their next trip. This waiting area is beside the park and not directly outside houses.
Remove the bus stop at 10 Walker Road and replace it with a new bus stop directly across the road. Buses will not wait at this bus stop and will only use it if people are waiting to catch the bus from here.
These changes will result in some on-street parking loss but will:
Ensure customers will be able to get on and off buses safely and comfortably.
Provide a waiting space is available for drivers to take breaks between trips.
Help to create a more reliable bus services.
We will also realign the kerb on the corner of Target Street and Pt Chevalier Road to enable buses to safely turn left from Pt Chevalier Road into Target Street.
We know there have been lots of road works in the area, so we’re working with the Pt Chevalier to Westmere project team to coordinate these infrastructure changes and minimise any additional disruption so when Pt Chevalier Road reopens to two-way traffic we can implement the bus improvements without delay.
Detailed plans can found in the Documents section on this page.

Why we are proposing it
Aucklanders tell us they want a better public transport system that is convenient, well-connected, accessible and reliable. Auckland Transport (AT) is on a mission to:
increase public transport use to reduce congestion
improve access for Aucklanders
support the economy and enhance the environment.
buses can move more people while using less space.
Benefits & Impacts
A place for bus drivers to take a break
Some on-street general parking space will be removed.
Consultation on the new bus stops and layover
We are now consulting on the locations for these relocated bus stops and would like to get your feedback before we proceed.
We would like to know:
What do you think of these plans?
Have we got the locations right?
Have we missed anything?
Have your say by:
completing the online survey below
Feedback will be open until 28 September 2024.
What happens next
Feedback from this consultation will be considered when making the decisions on this project.
A decision will be made including any changes made as a result of the consultation feedback.
A consultation and decisions report will be published on this page.
