Engagement Outcome

The engagement for this project has finished. We are proceeding with the project as planned.

About the project

We’re responding to community concerns about driver safety and are making improvements at the Taupaki Road and Waitākere Road intersection.

This area has been identified as high risk, with a history of loss-of-control crashes. We’re committed to making this road safer for all drivers, passengers, and the wider community.

The changes we’re making by January 2026

  • Install new "SLOW" road marking on a red surface on Waitākere Road to remind motorists they need to slow down as they approach the bend
  • Install skid-resistant surfacing on both approaches to the intersection. This aims to reduce the likelihood of loss-of-control crashes by improving vehicle grip, especially during wet weather conditions.
  • Re-paint existing road markings at the intersection and install extra speed and chevron signs. Chevron signs warn drivers that they are about to approach a bend or a curve.

Benefits to your community

  • Increases driver awareness and encourages appropriate speeds as they approach the intersection
  • Better signs and road markings will help guide drivers who are unfamiliar with this stretch of the road to drive to the conditions, manage their speed and travel through the bend safely.
  • Improves safety by clarifying right of way and minimising risk of collisions
  • Make the intersection safer for everyone who lives, works, or travels through Taupaki.

What happens next

  • We will be in touch with local residents and businesses prior to any work taking place.
  • Any change to the plan will be updated on our website.
