About the project

We're improving crossing and walking safety to make getting around Vipond Road easier for the community.

We are responding to safety concerns raised by the community to improve crossing and walking safety on Vipond Road in Stanmore Bay. This was requested by local students and public transport users in the area. Currently, there are no safe crossings on Vipond Road for tamariki on their commute to school, as well as for people catching the bus.

We want to make walking connections more convenient as people get around to access local amenities by extending the footpath to Whangaparāoa Road.

The footpath improvements will finish the connection to Whangaparāoa Road by providing a cohesive walking environment on the western end of Vipond Road. The footpath is funded under CATTR (Climate Action Targeted Transport Rates).

Growing communities mean busier roads – so we need to improve walking and crossing facilities and make travelling locally safer for everyone.

The changes we're making

  • Install a new crossing island outside #92 Vipond Road where people can safely wait to cross the road
  • Relocate bus stop outside #89 Vipond Road to outside #85 and bus stop from outside #92 to #98 to make way for the crossing islands and improve bus access
  • Install pram ramp with tactile pavers and widen footpath on both crossing points to give more room to wait to cross
  • Install new footpath from outside #73 Vipond Road that connects all the way near the intersection with Whangaparaoa Road
  • Reconstruct driveways that will be affected by the changes
  • Install pram ramp with tactile pavers at the corner of Vipond Road and Springtime Crescent to help visually impaired people find their way to safely cross the road
  • To make way for the footpath improvements, we need to clear access and re-allocate road space by removing 11 parking spaces
  • Install new signs and paint new road markings to support the change

Benefits to your community

  • Makes it safer and easier for children, their parents and caregivers, people with different accessibility needs to cross safely
  • Improves your health and wellbeing to enjoy the outdoors. It offers better access to nearby, parks, schools, public transport and other local amenities.
  • Footpaths make it safer for the community by separating motorists and traffic from people on foot, offering better connections to public transport and other local amenities.
  • Gives families more confidence to let their children walk, scoot or bike, fostering their independence. Getting around on foot doesn’t cost you or the environment a thing!
  • Protects students crossing and walking to and from the bus stops to get to school and making drivers more aware that they need to slow down

What happens next

We will install these changes in early 2026. Any change to the plan will be updated on this page.

We will be in touch with the local residents and businesses prior to any construction taking place.
