About the project
We’re improving crossing safety between 25-31 Veronica Street in New Lynn.
We want to ensure everyone of different accessibility needs, can cross here safely.
Giving you more travel choices to get around New Lynn by foot, bike, or scooter that is good for you, your whānau and the environment
The project was initiated following investigation of four crashes that were reported over the last five years on this section of Veronica Street, including a serious crash resulting in major injury while a person was crossing the road.
In July 2022, due to safety concerns for people walking in the area, we asked for your feedback on our proposal to install a traffic light-controlled crossing on Veronica Street in New Lynn. You can read more about that here.
After reviewing all the community feedback, we made changes to our initial design. This project will make crossing the road safer, with improvements to the footpath making it easier to navigate for people on foot.
What you need to know
Where | From 25 - 31 Veronica Street, New Lynn |
When | Monday, 13 January - Friday, 7 February 2025 |
Hours of work | 7am – 5 pm, Monday - Friday |
What we’ll be doing | - Installing a new traffic light-controlled crossing on Veronica Street
- Widening the footpath, reshaping and levelling the grass berm near the crossing to give more room to wait to cross safely and install new pram crossings
- Installing tactile pavers which are yellow guidance paving markers at the crossing points to help vision impaired people cross the road
- Painting new road markings and installing signs so motorists know to slow on approach and to give priority to people crossing the road here.
- Temporarily closing two bus stops, while the work takes place.
- Remove an existing tree outside 29 Veronica Street to make way for the new crossing improvements and prune back another tree near 31 Veronica Street to clear visibility on approach to the crossing.
- There may be some night works towards the end of construction in January and early February 2025.
|
Duration | Approximately 3 - 4 weeks (weather dependent) |
Why | - We’ve investigated safety concerns for people walking in the area highlighting this is not a safe place to cross, especially to visit Lynnmall
- A traffic light-controlled crossing will manage traffic on this busy road and gives priority to people on foot. Motorists must stop at a red traffic light to allow people to cross.
- The lights at the crossing will only stop traffic when people will push the button. Timing will be optimised to allow enough time for people to cross safely but also minimise the impact on Veronica Street.
- We will widen the footpath for easy accessibility for people on foot.
- The work is scheduled in the new year, after the holiday shopping period, to minimise disruption to the community.
|
Where we’ll be working
Before the work starts, digital signs will be set up along the route and near the town centre to inform the community about the closure and traffic directions for surrounding roads.
You can download maps here on our website. We appreciate your patience during this work.
The Work We’ll Be Doing - Traffic management & detours
- We’ll be working for approximately 4 weeks starting Monday, 13 January and finishing by Friday, 7 February 2025.
- To minimise the impact on the community, we will be starting work early in the new year, after the holiday rush.
- We’ll be working from 7 am to 5 pm on weekdays to finish this work on time for the New Lynn community.
- We’ll try to start the work on time but factors outside our control, such as weather could mean a delayed timeline. If the delay is significant, we’ll notify you and update this webpage regularly.
- Traffic Delays: Especially during peak times. Take care while driving, walking, or cycling in the area, especially if you live near the area.
- Traffic Management Plans: Will be in place from 13 January 2025, so please allow extra travel time. Follow all traffic signs, signals, and directions for safety.
- Affected Bus Services: Bus stops #1559 and #1546 will be temporarily closed during construction. Please plan ahead on the AT mobile app, follow detours and expect delays. More information is available on the affected bus stops and detour routes are available via QR codes on posters
- At times there will be limited footpath access on the northern side of Veronica Street
- Driveway and vehicle access to properties near the work site will be restricted, while work takes place. We will personally liaise with effected businesses to minimise any disruption.
- Council waste and recycling collection will continue as normal. If access to your bin collection spot is restricted, our team will assist you with an alternative location.
- Noise: Construction will run from 7 am to 5 pm to finish as quickly as possible. We know our work can be a bit loud, and that noise can be disruptive. We’ll try to keep noise levels down.
- We will need to remove one tree where the crossing is being installed. However, we will plant new trees in a different location to compensate for the lost tree.
- As part of this work, our road maintenance team will reseal and install anti-skid surfacing to avoid slips and accidents on this street in early 2026. This makes it more durable, extends its lifespan and prevents the need for frequent repairs and maintenance.
- There may some night works towards the end of construction in January and early February 2025
