Auckland Transport is proposing safety improvements around the intersection of Vauxhall Road and Tainui Road, Devonport.
These changes aim to make the area safer and easier for people walking, cycling, catching the bus, and driving. They respond to concerns about vehicle speeds and pedestrian safety on Vauxhall Road.
This area is busy, with local shops, bus stops, and lots of people walking. The proposed improvements will help slow traffic and provide safer places to cross the road.
The changes we’re proposing:
Upgrade the existing pedestrian crossing at #85 Vauxhall Road to a raised pedestrian crossing.
Upgrade the pedestrian refuge island on Tainui Road to a pedestrian crossing.
Improve pedestrian facilities at the Tainui Road / Vauxhall Road corner by:
Building out the kerb to widen the waiting area.
Shortening the crossing distance across Tainui Road.
Upgrading surrounding pedestrian ramps with tactile indicators.
Install red road surfacing and “SLOW” road markings on Vauxhall Road to encourage lower speeds and alert drivers that they are entering a high-pedestrian area.
Relocate and upgrade nearby bus stops, including the installation of broken yellow lines to improve bus access and safety.
Build a kerb buildout at one relocated bus stop.
Rebuild vehicle crossings where required.
Add red road surfacing and shared path markings to improve visibility and safety for people walking and cycling.

Following community engagement, we will review all feedback received.
We will then seek the necessary approvals to proceed with the proposed changes.
