About the project
We are improving footpath safety and connections on Totaravale Drive in Totara Vale to provide safe, convenient and well-connected walking and cycling options for the community. Totaravale Drive has been selected as a focus area to support more sustainable transport options including better walking and cycling facilities and access to public transport.
This project is funded by the Auckland Council Climate Action Transport Targeted Rate (CATTR) which aims to reduce transport emissions in Tāmaki Makaurau.
The changes we're making
Building a new footpath on the southern side of Totaravale Drive between Trias Road and 62 Totaravale Drive
Realigning the kerb to make room for the new footpath*
Adding seven new marked perpendicular parking spaces for residents and visitors*
Extending the driveways for three properties (54-58 Totaravale Drive) located where the new footpath will go
Adding a new set of crossing ramps on Trias Road for people who walk or use a wheelchair
Repainting the bus stop markings at the Totaravale Reserve bus stop (stop ID 3852)
Adding new or extending 'no stopping' yellow lines along Totaravale Drive by the Totaravale Reserve bus stop, the driveways in the indented area where the new footpath will go, and parts of Trias Road to prevent parked vehicles from blocking driveway access and sight lines
*These changes were added to the design in October 2024 after further internal discussions.
Drawings on the right-hand side of this webpage show where the changes will be installed.
Benefits to your community
Footpaths make it safer for the community by separating motorists and traffic from people on foot.
More footpaths offer better connections to schools, parks, public transport and other local amenities.
Encouraging walking and cycling is good for the environment and good for your health. It helps reduce reliance on cars for local trips, decreasing traffic congestion and reducing our carbon emissions.
Pram crossings make it safer and more convenient for people pushing prams or strollers to cross roads. It has a small ramp at the curb level reducing the need to lift the pram which can be unsafe, especially when managing traffic. It helps ensure those with mobility needs can navigate crossings more easily.
New road markings clarify right of way, improve safety by minimising risk of collisions, and ensures compliance with traffic regulations.
What happens next
We will install these changes between November and December 2024.
Any change to the plan will be updated on this page.
We will be in touch with local residents and businesses prior to any construction taking place.
