About the project
Auckland Transport are delivering cycling upgrades on Te Horeta Road - Mount Wellington
The new upgrades will make it easier and safer for everyone moving around on their bike, whether they’re going to the shops, work, school or visiting friends and whānau.
This project aims at providing a direct connection for cyclists to carry on Te Horeta Road, as part of the Cycling and Micromobility programme.
There is currently an off road route that avoids the tunnel and the narrow section to the north of the tunnel but it requires several road crossings. There are also a lack of cycle crossing amenities at these road crossings, forcing the cyclist to ride on the road or share the pedestrian crossing and carefully avoid pedestrians.
Proposed changes
The changes involve upgrading the existing northbound cycle lane to a bidirectional cycle lane. This will connect to the shared path to the south and the Mountain Road shared path to the north.
The project will also include improvements to the commercial vehicle crossing at Naylor Love Storage Yard. To accommodate the bi-directional cycle lane, the cycle path will be widened by reducing the island in the tunnel, and cutting into the bank to the north. The total upgrade length is approximately 500 meters.
Support a healthier, cheaper, and more sustainable way to move around.
Provide dedicated spaces for people to cycle on the road.
Make it safer for children cycling to and from school.
Improving the cycling experience around Auckland.
What happens next
We plan to implement these changes by July 2025. To minimise impact on the community, we will be in touch with local residents and businesses prior to any construction taking place.
Any change to the plan will be updated on this page.
