Safe walking connections on Te Atatū Road, Te Atatū South
Engagement outcome
Thank you to everyone who reached out to us to ask questions and provide their insights, about the planned changes to the intersection near the BP on Te Atatū Road, Te Atatū South.
After careful consideration, we are proceeding with the project as planned.
Raw comments from the community
- “We support the implementation of some safety measures.”
- "Moving the zebra crossing and adding raised concrete islands seems like an unnecessary solution that could actually worsen traffic flow in this area!"
- "Need to consider problems arising from new terrace intensive housing on the corner of Tirimoana Road.”
- “Problem for more cars waiting to turn right.”
- “Need to extend more roadside clearway on the north of Tirimoana Road.”
- “Move the crossing past Tirimoana road, so that it is closer to the bus stop that goes towards interchange.”
Below is the summary of the insights and comments we received and our response to them:
Congestion
Community have raised concerns around the current impact of congestion within the area. Will the new changes influence congestion especially in the turn bay into Tirimoana Road.
Our response
Our site observations show that some drivers use the flush median to access the right-turn bay earlier than intended, which creates potential conflicts with people on foot at the zebra crossing. In addition, the existing crossing partially overlaps the driveway of the BP petrol station, creating further safety risks.
The proposed refuge islands will help to make pedestrians more visible to approaching drivers and provide protection to pedestrians in the centre of the road, reducing these conflicts.
The site visit also indicates that right-turn queues at Tirimoana Road generally remain below three vehicles during peak hours, which is within the proposed right-turn bay capacity. Therefore, we do not expect a significant impact on through traffic or additional congestion at the roundabout.
Placing of crossing
We support the implementation of some safety measures.
Our response
Moving the zebra crossing to the northern side of the intersection was considered; however, this is not preferred as it would conflict with the existing bus stop on the western side of Te Atatu Road. Furthermore, the road layout on this approach includes a bend, which reduce visibility for drivers to see pedestrians and respond safely.
Bus stop placement
Currently the bus stop impacts sightlines on a corner and especially when there is a queue of traffic.
Our response
The main focus of this project is to improve pedestrian safety at the zebra crossing on Te Atatū Road and ensure the proposed changes operate effectively with current traffic conditions. The suggestions for relocating the bus stop outside #2 Tirimonana Road has been noted.
We will pass your comments on to relevant Auckland Transport's internal team for consideration as part of their future reviews of bus stop placement.

About this project
Heads up! We’ll be improving crossing safety near the intersection of Te Atatū Road and Tirimoana Road.
Growing communities means busier roads – so we need to improve crossing facilities and make travelling locally safer for everyone!
The upgraded crossing facility will prioritise people crossing, especially our tamariki, and the local community.
The changes we’re making:
- Move the existing zebra crossing slightly south of its current location, so it’s clear of the petrol station driveway and upgrade the existing zebra crossing to include new central crossing islands. These islands are a small section of pavement surrounded by concrete where people can safely wait when crossing the street.
- Move the existing bus stop outside 9A Te Atatū Road, for visibility near the crossing and to make space for the new crossing location.
- Tactile pavers and footpath upgrades on either side of the crossing allowing more room to wait to cross.
- Installing new road markings, signs and lighting associated with the upgraded zebra crossing.
- Painting no stopping at all times (broken yellow lines) on the approaches to the crossing. This clears access and prevents cars from parking near the crossing and improves sight lines.
Benefits for your community:
- Safer crossings for the community, especially children and people with different accessibility needs.
- Encourages walking, biking, and scootering – which is healthier and better for the environment.
- New road markings and signs clarify right of way, improve safety by minimising risk of collisions, and ensures compliance with traffic regulations.
- Supports community connections – Shows a commitment to the safety of the entire community and nearby residents.
What happens next
We will install these changes in 2026
Any changes to the designs will be updated on this page.
We will be in touch with residents and businesses prior to any construction taking place.
