We’re responding to community concerns that there is no formal crossing facility on Stanniland Street to help people safely reach the shops on Whiteacres Drive.

Thanks to the Howick Local Board, we have identified two potential locations for a new pedestrian refuge crossing. This will make it safer and easier for people to cross Stanniland Street.

Only one crossing will be installed, and your feedback will help us decide the best location.

Tell us your preferred options by Sunday 21 December, 2025. The survey is at the bottom of the page.

We are proposing to change by June 2026:

Pedestrian improvements

  • Pedestrian refuge island crossing – a raised island at the middle of the road to provide an area for people to safely wait for a gap in traffic to finish crossing the road
  • Pram ramps – to make it easier for people with prams and mobility users to cross the road
  • Tactile pavers (yellow guidance markers) – to assist visually impaired pedestrians

Improving driver safety

  • Red ‘slow’ markings – to provide a visual cue and increase driver awareness
  • Driver feedback LED signs – these display real-time speeds and encourage drivers to slow down
  • Pedestrian signage – to remind drivers to be cautious and watch for pedestrians, particularly elderly pedestrians
  • Side islands - on the southbound approach, side islands will be installed to reduce the effective lane width and encourages lower speeds.

Location 1: Between Whiteacres Drive and Park Avenue (near Park Village retirement village)

This option provides direct access from Park Avenue to shops on Whiteacres Drive, intersection improvements, fewer parking changes and is located close to side roads.

Parking changes on Stanniland Street for safety

  • Reprioritise five parking spaces as “no stopping at all times” zones to improve visibility of the crossing
  • Reprioritise one parking space to create a side island, narrowing the lane and encouraging lower speeds

Intersection improvements

  • Kerb extension changes – at Whiteacres Drive and Park Avenue to widen footpath space for pedestrians and encourage lower turn speeds into these roads

Waiting bay (diagonal white stripes) for vehicles waiting to turn right into Whiteacres Drive

Location 2: Outside #42 and #37 Stanniland Street

This option provides less direct access from Park Avenue to the shops on Whiteacres Drive, and more parking changes.

Parking changes for safety

• Reprioritise ten parking spaces on Stanniland Street as “no stopping at all times” zones to improve visibility at crossings

• Reprioritise one parking space on Stanniland Street to narrow the vehicle lane with a side island, encouraging lower vehicle speeds.

Community benefits

  • Slower, safer traffic near the crossing
  • Makes it safer for tamariki and pedestrians to cross Stanniland Street.
  • Improves accessibility, particularly for those with mobility challenges and visual impairments.
  • Supports walking as practical options
  • Clearer road markings and signage
