Project update (October 2025)
🚸 Safety improvements outside Three Kings School on the way
Auckland Transport will soon start construction on safety improvements outside Three Kings School.
In December 2024, we asked the community to share their thoughts on our plans to help school students travel to and from school safely and help slow drivers through the school zone.
We’re upgrading the existing pedestrian crossing to a raised crossing, based on community feedback and advocacy from the school. The new crossing will be level with the footpath to slow drivers on approach and ensures people crossing can be clearly visible to motorists.
Additional improvements include upgraded footpaths on either side of the crossing providing more space to wait, tactile yellow pavers to guide people to find their way to the crossing, new road markings and signage. We will also be adding four P120 angled parking spaces for short term parking for the school from Monday to Friday, 8am-6pm.
To maximise safety, we will reallocate three on-street parking spaces. These enhancements aim to create a safer environment for everyone, especially our tamariki, school whānau, and the wider Three Kings community.

These changes are expected to be completed over the summer of 2025/26.

About the project
Exciting news! In 2025, we’re enhancing crossing safety on St Andrews Road in Three Kings.
We’ve been working with Three Kings School to improve their crossing facilities near their school's side entrance, a popular pick-up/drop-off area on St Andrews Road.
Three Kings School leadership team asked us to build crossing facilities that better protect their students, reduce vehicle speeds, and allow drivers more time to see children using the crossing during peak use periods – before and after school.
Growing communities means busier roads – so we’re working with our communities to make travelling locally safer for everyone!
The changes we're making
- Raising the zebra crossing so its level with the footpath to slow drivers on approach and ensures people crossing can be seen by motorists.
- Adding four P120 parking spaces for short term parking for the school from Monday to Friday, 8am-6pm.
- Upgrade the footpaths on either side of the crossing including more room to wait to cross.
- Painting new road markings, installing signs and beacon lights so motorists know they are near a school, to slow on approach and to give priority to people crossing the road here.
- Install tactile pavers which are yellow guidance paving markers to help vision impaired people cross the road.
- We’re reallocating 2 parking spaces for the footpath extension.

- Getting around on foot is good for the environment and good for your health. It helps reduce reliance on cars for local trips, decreasing traffic congestion and reducing our carbon emissions.
- It helps ensure those with mobility needs can navigate crossings more easily.
- New road markings and signs clarify right of way, alert drivers to slow down approaching a crossing. It improves safety by minimising risk of collisions, and ensures compliance with traffic regulations
- Safer crossings minimise risks to traffic flow and dangerous situations on the road. People crossing are prioritised so motorists will only need to stop when someone needs to cross
Impacts:
- Reallocation of road space by removing some resident parking spaces
- Construction time creating time delays from detour.

We will install these changes in 2025.
