What we are doing
Auckland Transport is proposing pedestrian and intersection safety improvements along St Johns Road and at the St Johns Road / Dorchester Street intersection. The changes will provide a safe, dedicated place for people to cross the road and access local shops and bus stops.
We heard from the community that there is currently no safe crossing point on St Johns Road near Dorchester Street, making it difficult for people on foot – particularly those heading to nearby shops and bus stops – to cross safely.
The proposed works are located outside 91–122 St Johns Road and at the Dorchester Street intersection and are planned to be completed before June 2027.
What we are proposing
How this works
To improve safety and accessibility, we're proposing to:
Install a new signalised mid-block pedestrian crossing, with kerb buildout, traffic island, and high friction surfacing, outside 97 St Johns Road.
Install a new kerb buildout and pram crossing across Dorchester Street at the St Johns Road / Dorchester Street intersection.
Extend existing broken yellow lines (no stopping restrictions) to improve visibility at the crossing.
Remove bus stops adjacent to 111 St Johns Road (ID:7439) and 122 St Johns Road (ID:7436), to keep the bus service running efficiently given low passenger numbers at these stops.
Upgrade existing bus stop markings adjacent to 91 St Johns Road (ID:7437) and 104 St Johns Road (ID:7434).
Prune or remove trees outside No. 97, No. 101, No. 106 and No. 108 St Johns Road to accommodate these changes.
These changes will result in the net removal of eight on-street parking spaces, which will help improve visibility at the crossings and support safer, more efficient movement through the area.
