About this project

We’re improving walking safety by installing a footpath on the southern side of Smythe Road in Henderson to provide safe, convenient and well-connected walking options in your community.

This project is part of the First and Final Leg programme, which helps people walk safely and easily to public transport — in this case, the Henderson Train Station. It will also make it safer and easier for people living nearby, including students at the Henderson High School, encouraging safe walking options in your neighbourhood.

The changes we’re making:

  • Install a new footpath and kerb on the southern side of Smythe Road between #22 Smythe Road and the Henderson Valley Road - Smythe Road intersection. This extends the footpath by approx. 150 metres in this area.
  • We will rebuild the driveways that will be affected by the new footpath. Any work that alters a driveway shall be at our cost.
  • Trimming vegetation to clear access and make it safe for people using the footpath.
  • To make room for these changes we need to clear access and reallocate road space by removing two parking spaces.

A drawing showing the changes is included below.

Benefits for your community:

  • Footpaths make it safer for the community by separating motorists and traffic from people on foot. Widening the footpath gives more room for people to wait to cross the road at the intersection.
  • Well-maintained footpaths are safer for people who walk and ride their bikes and scooters, reducing the risk of being hurt or injured.
  • More footpaths make it easier and stress-free for the community to move around the neighbourhood, offering better connections to schools, parks, public transport and other local amenities.
  • Walking and cycling are good for the environment and for your health. It helps reduce reliance on cars for local trips, decreasing traffic congestion and reducing our carbon emissions.

What happens next

  • We will be in touch with local residents and businesses prior to any work taking place.
  • Any change to the plan will be updated on our website.
