We'd like your feedback on recent improvements on Shea Terrace, Takapuna

The work we did

The project aimed to improve everyone’s safety by installing a new footpath and marking changes to the road layout on Shea Terrace between North Shore Hospital and the end of the cul-de-sac.

Improvements included:

• Installing a new footpath, grass berm and kerb realignment near 21 Shea Terrace.
• Installing additional parking spaces and adding new road markings by clearing roadside vegetation near the cul-de-sac.
• Installing tactile pavers at the pram crossing near North Shore Hospital entrance.

This project was delivered through our Community Initiated Programme, which prioritises local request about safety concerns. We're committed to responding to community feedback by delivering improvements more quickly, cost-effectively, and efficiently.

About this project

We’re responding to concerns raised by the community to make Shea Terrace in Takapuna safer and easier for everyone to use by improving the footpath and road layout.

People in the area have told us that they’re worried about the safety of people walking or cycling, because Shea Terrace is a narrow road, and when cars park on both sides, it’s hard for drivers to see people walking, crossing and to move safely. Drivers are forced over the centre line creating potential safety risks and affects visibility of other road users.

The changes we’re making in 2026

• Building a new footpath and kerb realignment on Shea Terrace between North Shore Hospital Drive to the end of the cul-de-sac. We will need to reshape the grass berm, level the soil and remove/prune two trees.
• Paint no stopping at all times (broken yellow lines) along parts of Shea Terrace. This clears access and helps with visibility into and out of Shea Terrace and stops cars from parking at the entry and exit points of the street. This also makes it easier for drivers to see oncoming cars, cyclists and people walking or crossing the road.
• Install and clearly mark reallocated parking spaces, so people know where they can park safely
• Upgrade the pram ramp near North Shore Hospital Drive to make it safer and easier for parents, caregivers, and people with mobility needs to cross.

Benefits to the community:

• Footpaths make it safer for the community by separating motorists and traffic from people on foot.
• More footpaths make it easier and stress-free for you and local children to move about your community, offering better connections to schools, parks, public transport and other local amenities.
• Parking will still be available to the community, with no removal of existing parking spaces.
• Improves visibility for drivers to see oncoming cars, people walking, cycling and crossing the road, making it safer, particularly for tamariki (children).
• Clears access and keeps the lane clear for traffic, particularly during peak hours in the morning and afternoons.
