Consultation outcome

We would like to thank the members of the community who shared their feedback for this consultation. Based on what we heard, we will be proceeding with the proposed clearway with no further design changes.

What happens next

We hope to install the new clearway before the end of June 2025. The hours will be from 7am to 7pm, Monday through Friday. As a reminder, cars will still be allowed to park overnight on weekdays and at any time on weekends.

If you’d like to speak to someone about our plans, please email us at ATEngagement@at.govt.nz.

About the project

St Heliers Bay Road is major road with many homes, businesses and schools. About 13,000 vehicles travel through it each day, and it serves as a key route for buses, service and supply vehicles. Many people also walk and cycle along it.

On a small section of St Heliers Bay Road just before the approach to the five-way intersection (at Riddell Road, Maskell Street, and Parkside Street), there is space for parking - roughly between properties 169 and 163 St Heliers Bay Rd.

People in the area told us that when cars are parked in that space in the daytime, it creates a bottleneck for traffic on the road by the five-way intersection, causing congestion, delays, and safety and visibility issues for people trying to manoeuvre around the parked cars. The congestion and delays are especially problematic in morning and afternoon peak hours.

What we proposed

After investigating the situation, we proposed to put a 7am-7pm, Monday-Friday clearway on St Heliers Bay Road just before the approach to the five-way intersection at Riddell Road, Maskell Street and Parkside Street (roughly between properties 169 and 163).

Design drawings on our webpage provide more details.
