About the project

St Heliers Bay Road is major road with many homes, businesses and schools. About 13,000 vehicles travel through it each day, and it serves as a key route for buses, service and supply vehicles. Many people also walk and cycle along it.

On a small section of St Heliers Bay Road just before the approach to the five-way intersection (at Riddell Road, Maskell Street, and Parkside Street), there is space for parking - roughly between properties 169 and 163 St Heliers Bay Rd.

People in the area have told us that when cars are parked in that space in the daytime, it creates a bottleneck for traffic on the road by the five-way intersection, causing congestion, delays, and safety and visibility issues for people trying to manoeuvre around the parked cars. The congestion and delays are especially problematic in morning and afternoon peak hours.

What we are proposing

After investigating the situation, we're proposing to put a clearway on St Heliers Bay Road just before the approach to the five-way intersection at Riddell Road, Maskell Street and Parkside Street (roughly between properties 169 and 163).

The clearway hours would be from 7am-7pm, Monday through Friday. Cars would still be allowed to park overnight on weekdays and at any time on weekends.

Design drawings are available on our webpage with more details on where the clearway would go.

What we want your feedback on

We are seeking feedback from those who live at, have a business, or frequently travel through this part of St Heliers Bay Road.

We'd like to know whether putting a 7am-7pm, M-F clearway in this space would be enough to help ease congestion and delays in that area, or if more intervention is needed.

How you can have your say

Have your say by completing our quick, 4-question survey.

The survey will be open until 13 April 2025.

If you’d like to speak to someone about our plans, please email us at ATEngagement@at.govt.nz.
