Selwyn Street and Arthur Street Intersection Improvement Project
Construction of a roundabout at the intersection and Vector works starts Monday 23 March 2026.
It will take approximately 13 weeks depending on weather and Vector works.
Most of the works will be done during the day. Night works are not planned until the later stages when the roundabout is installed.
- Selwyn Street will remain open to traffic both ways approx. 10 weeks until Stage 4 when half of the roundabout is installed and one lane will close.
- Detour routes when on the western side of Selwyn Street are via Hill Street, Grey Street and Church Street
- Detour routes when working on the eastern side (town centre) and Vector works are Grey Street, Onehunga Mall and Church Street
- Bus access will remain on Selwyn Street south and Arthur Street east
Vector works
Vector is installing a new 33kV underground power connection at the intersection. We are taking a dig once approach and are delivering Vector’s trench works at the same time, approx. 72 metres.
Progress for this stage is heavily dependent on what sort of ground conditions we encounter. This would include existing services and if we need to lower them or not to fit in the power connection.
It will depend on what we find once we open the road.

Vector is installing a new 33kV underground power connection at the intersection. We are taking a dig once approach and are delivering Vector’s trench works at the same time, approx. 72 metres. Vector’s work is on Selwyn Street and Arthur Street east. It involves digging down 1.5 metres under the road. Traffic management remains the same from Stage 2

About the project
Making the Selwyn Street and Arthur Street intersection safer for all road users!
This project is part of Auckland Transport's High-Risk Intersection programme, a safety improvement programme that prioritises safety interventions at high-risk intersections in Auckland.
Between 2018 and 2025, 34 crashes occurred at the intersection, resulting in 1 serious injury and 12 minor injuries, primarily due to turning or failure to give way. Contributing factors include poor visibility, high approach speeds, and inadequate pedestrian facilities that are misaligned with the desire lines to nearby shops and schools.
In August 2025, we proposed changes the Selwyn Street, Arthur Street intersection, Onehunga. After reviewing all the feedback we received, we are proceeding with the work with the following changes.
- Remove the speed cushion on Arthur Street approaches to minimise the risk of excess noise and vibration on the minor road corridors.
The work we're doing:
Installing a mountable urban roundabout, including any associated signage and road markings.
Installing speed cushions on all approaches and traffic islands to slow approaching traffic and improve vehicle deflection when entering the roundabout.
Providing pedestrian crossings on all four legs of the intersection, including the removal of the existing pedestrian refuge islands on Selwyn Street near #74 and #110.
- Installing two driver feedback signs on Selwyn Street, one outside #68 and another outside #83.
The project is expected to significantly reduce the likelihood of crashes at the intersection and reduce vehicle speeds in the area. It is also expected to improve safety and amenities for pedestrians.

Benefits and Impacts
The roundabout will slow traffic speeds, making it safer for bus and other heavy vehicle movements, as well as for turning and crossing.
Safer pedestrian crossing facilities will make it easier and more enjoyable for you, our tamariki, and the community to navigate your neighbourhood with confidence.
Parking changes will involve reprioritising two parking spaces, one on Arthur Street to accommodate the new pedestrian crossing and another on Selwyn Street to formalise the broken yellow lines opposite the Harbour View Terrace intersection.
