About the project

Waiheke Local Board has identified Sea View Road as a location for pedestrian safety improvements. On their behalf, Auckland Transport (AT) is installing the following changes

The changes we are making

We will install a new raised pedestrian crossing outside Waiheke Primary School.

The pedestrian refuge crossing outside 57 Seaview Road, which serves as the main crossing for Waiheke Primary School, will be upgraded to a raised zebra crossing. This design prioritises pedestrians, especially Waiheke Primary School students.

The changes include

  • Install a pedestrian refuge island on Sea View Road, Ostend.
  • Upgrading the corners with kerb ramps, which help people with strollers or wheelchairs move easily between the footpath and the road.
  • Paint new road markings, including a flush median, and broken yellow lines (no stopping at all times)

4 on-street car parks will be removed or repurposed to increase visibility for pedestrians

Benefits of this project

  • Enhances safety and accessibility for pedestrians, especially school children.
  • Reduces the risk of accidents by providing a designated crossing area.
  • Reduces the number of drivers exceeding the speed limit
  • Improves the overall walkability of the neighbourhood.

This project is funded by the Local Board Transport Capital Fund. This fund is used to make improvements based on community priorities, which may not be covered by other programmes of work. The improvements will be delivered by AT on behalf of your local board.

What happens next:

  • We will aim to deliver this project in February 2026
  • We will be in touch with local residents before any construction takes place.
  • Any change to the plan will be updated on this page.
