Sea Spray Drive, Half Moon Bay - Pedestrian Improvements
Consultation Outcome
After reviewing the feedback we received, we are proceeding with no changes on our proposal to improve pedestrian safety on Sea Spray Drive, Half Moon Bay.
What happens next
We anticipate these changes will be installed between June 2025 and June 2026
We'll be in touch with local residents before any changes take place.
Community Feedback
Thank you for helping us make better decisions for your neighbourhood, informed by your local knowledge.
Below is a summary of your feedback and our responses.
“Reduce the risk of accident at the intersection. With more and more traffic, parked cars parked on intersection between Bucklands Beach Road and Sea Spray Drive currently reduces visibility for people coming out of Sea Spray drive. The pedestrian crossing island is a very good idea as it will help school kids and very soon help old people moving into the new retirement village to cross the road.”
Broken Yellow Lines:
- Suggestion to extend the yellow lines on both sides of Sea Spray Drive to prevent traffic from overtaking parked cars on Buckland Beach Road.
Thank you for your suggestion.
We understand that local residents want on-street parking, and we also need to keep the road accessible for everyone. Sea Spray Drive is wide enough to safely fit both parked cars and moving traffic. Therefore, we cannot extend the broken yellow lines at this time.
Congestion:
- Suggestion for new housing developments on Sea Spray Drive to provide off-street parking due to congestion on both sides of the road.
The issue of growth and new housing developments you’ve mentioned is happening across the Auckland region. It does pose challenges for AT and Aucklanders such as increased congestion, and pressure on limited kerbside parking.
The rules for parking in new developments are set by Auckland Council under the Auckland Unitary Plan.

About the project
In response to multiple community requests to improve safety and visibility for pedestrians, especially Tamariki, crossing the road, we are proposing to install a pedestrian island at the intersection of Sea Spray Drive and Bucklands Beach Road in Half Moon Bay.
Our investigation identified that this intersection is well used by pedestrians and students from surrounding schools.
What we are proposing
We are proposing to build a pedestrian island
- Install a pedestrian island on the intersection of Sea Spray Drive and Bucklands Beach Road. This is a raised island with a cut-through in the middle of a road that makes it safer for people crossing by breaking up the journey.
- Rebuild the ramp from the footpath to the road and reinstall yellow tactiles so it aligns with the pedestrian island. This will help pedestrians move easily from the footpath to the road. to the road.
- Paint broken yellow lines (no stopping at all times) to ensure adequate visibility for pedestrians crossing and vehicles turning out of Sea Spray Drive. The broken yellow lines will be along both sides of the intersection and outside 190 Bucklands Beach Road.

Benefits and impacts
This project aims to improve safety and visibility
These changes would:
- Make it safer for people, especially Tamariki, to cross the intersection.
- Make it safer for drivers to enter and exit Sea Spray Drive.
To improve visibility, nine on-street parking spaces will be removed. We acknowledge this can be inconvenient, so we have minimised the removal of parking as much as possible.
What we want your feedback on
With your local knowledge, we invite you to provide your feedback on the extent of broken yellow lines and the type of treatment we are proposing.
